D4d Clutch Slip

Hello.

had my D4d for 4 years and is on a 51 plate (used from Toyota).

it appears the clutch is slipping in 3 and 4th gear and was wondering if this could just be a normally worn clutch or the dreaded DMF problem.

Had no symptoms other than a bit lumpy when idling but this has been way before the clutch slip issue.

The irony of this is i was just explaining to my neighbour two days ago that it is a great vehicle etc. Sods law and i guess i asked for it.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

well - its a welcome to the forum of course!!

And so sad to hear about your problem - you are obviously up late worrying about it.

What mileage has the car done? Clutches can wear at different rates depending on use. To me it sounds as if its wear and tear and maybe the car has been used for towing? But then I'm only a 3-door petrol RAV driver

Is it making any knocking or rattling rattling noises? You will here if the DMF is breaking cos it rattles a lot.

You can have normal clutch slip without DMF issues. However, the biggest part of changing the DMF is the same labour as the clutch. Get a good garage to check it at the same time and if in any doubt get rid of it.

If its the original clutch then 86k is ok. I'd got my clutch changed at 65k.

If you are looking to get the clutch done, shop around as prices vary dramatically. The work can be done in situ without pulling the engine out.

EDIT - the DMF - not the car.

  • 1 year later...

Hi, My 03 2.0D-4D has clutch slip in 3rd 4th and 5th gears when accelerating at about 3000 revs, there is no other noise or rattling, but there is some cluch judder.

I am concerned there may be a dmf problem although the car is post Toyotas remedial date.

Any advice, or guide as to the aprox. cost to have a new clutch fitted, or should I get rid.

Any advice welcome.

Unfortunately, most of the cost in doing the clutch is labour and if I were in your shoes, unless I knew the DMF had been done there is no way I wouldn't do it at the same time.

I have heard of them being done for about £1000 all in. I know its dear but you can't sell it with the clutch slipping and if you change it all then sell it you have just provided somebody with a very nice serviceable car.

Thanks for the advice, it makes sense, but what has to be done to the dmf?

Can the existing dmf not be checked for security etc. while the new clutch is fitted?

Should the dmf fail if it is after the factory modification introduced in 2002/3?

and it had a new clutch fitted in 2006 at 57000 miles by Toyota dealership, its now done 106000 miles.

The dmf is really a none serviceable unit and it sounds like you had a clutch at 57k but not a dmf. I can find you a pdf that explains how to check a dmf but even post modded units occasionally "throw their hand in". The additional cost of a dmf kit including clutch is not that much more than a clutch on its own so if it does 12 months and fails you will end up paying another grand to have it done again. When you check a dmf for wear you can see that it falls into certain parameters but you can't predict the life of the springs - it is no more reliable than trying to predict the life of a starter or a wheel bearing. The only difference is that you don't have to do so much digging to get at the starter or wheel bearing as you do the dmf which couldn't be more inaccesible if it tried.

As they say on blind date "its up to you"!!!

Just back from Mr. T with my estimate for new clutch and Dmf, as follows;

Clutch cover assemly £91.86

Clutch release bearing 22.11

Clutch plate 98.97

Ring gear [dmf] 688.26

labour 680.00

vat 276.71

Total £1857.91

I was also told that the expected life was 64,000 miles, less if towing.

This whole thing is a sick joke, many 4x4s are bought to tow caravans, should not this information be

stated plainly in sales brochures, I will certainly do my best to broadcast it.

My previous vehicle a Peugeot 406 2L 110 diesel towed my caravan, and I let my son have it with

110,000 miles on it, it has now done 132,000 miles, never had a clutch yet, let alone a flywheel.

Call me old fashioned.

You can get a complete DMF and clutch for less than £600 and get a good local to install it. I think you could get best part of £500 off that price if you shop around. HEMI is not a million miles away and he will do it for you but he will probably want to fit his signature SMF kit!

That happened to us - D4D 51 plate - slipping clutch and knocking noise in engine - DMF failure and £1500 to fix.
