Toyota Giving Me Lots Of Headache

hi there,

this is my 1st post, so please bear with me whilst i tell you my problems.

i have just bought a toyota avensis 2.0 d4d (late 2004 model). Since i used to own a petrol car, i thought that this car was stalling due to me not being used to its clutch biting-point as its a diesel. But now that i've had it for a few weeks, i still keep stalling the car and the clutch is extremely heavy. In fact the clutch is so heavy that after 10 mins of use, my leg is extremely tired.

Now i know people here will say that a heavy clutch is normal for the avensis, but why does it keep stalling as i move off?

Also i have heard that if you change a few things, such as the cylinders and sensors, the clutch becomes extremely light...is there a way of doing such a thing or am i stuck with a heavy clutch?

thanks for your help

There is a modified clutch arm/pivot and boot, due to the arm getting dirty and sticking, but this does require the gearbox to be removed, I think there is also a modified clutch master cylinder too!

Kingo

does this make the clutch lighter?? and if so, would it make it very light?? (almost like a petrol car?)

also what kind of costs am i looking at if i had to get a clutch arm+boot or a modified clutch cylinder and where can i get them frm??

Its probably your driving.. skills.. - no offence.

Rev engine alittle more and gentley lift clutch

or get a pressure plate that is not geuine -like ones made by sachs.

the avensis clutch is heavy by default.

diesels are much harder to stall and I would have thought, as it's new to you, that you'd be driving much more carefully to get used to it. Therefore you shouldn't be having any problems at all.

None taken, lol.

Your right in saying that the avensis clutch is heavy by default, but i have many taxi driver friends who drive these cars and after checking a few of them out, mine is definately a lot heavier.

I am trying to drive carefully, but my leg gets tired and whenever i press the clutch, it feels like i'm on a cross-trainer in a gym. The clutch is kind of rough to press too as though its grinding.

I have been reading on http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=635& and it says:-

Clutches can fail quite early. Clutch trouble with T180 due to a problem with the master cylinder, not the clutch itself, clutch release or slave cylinder. Failed glow plugs reported on 4 year old D-4Ds. Cost £300 to replace.

1.What would a non-genuine pressure plate do and what costs am i looking at?

2.After speaking to a friend, he recommends changing the master/slave cylinders (don't know what they are)...what do you guys think?

ok you have to bear in mind ....

1 - your car is not the T180

2 - No know problems with the older generation master cylinders.

I have driven lots of avensis Diesels and pretty much all the clutchs are hard.

I once replaced a genuine clutch with a sachs, for a 2.0 TD - that clutch/pressure plate combo was alot lighter, But under full throttle you could feel the clutch slip.

You need to describe your problems alittle futher...

To start off the diagnosis do the following and report back.

1 - Leave car off

2 - press clutch down - How does it feel ?

3 - does it squeek ? or make any noises ?

4 - select all gears - all ok ? go through 1st 2nd and 3rd etc

ok now start the car, drive to a steep hill.

1 - put the car in first

2 - get biting point, move off slowly.

3 - do the same , set off the hill, this time be alittle more aggressive (dont wheel spin car)

3 - what do you hear on both occasion? - make sure you got your windows down and the heaters fans off. listen for rattles or scrapes..

report back

Right thanks for your help cmia mate.

Whilst the car is off, there is a very very tiny squeaky noise (hardly noticeable), but this could be the clutch spring?? The clutch feels ok all the way to press down, but its becomes harder to press just on an inch or two before touching the floor. The gears are sometimes ok to press, but sometimes, the stick gets kind of stuck going into gear 5.

The second task you have given me is difficult to check as i am hard of hearing. I will get a friend to test it and report back to you.

Thank You Again!

Thats the spring on the pedal (most likley)

clutch feels ok all the way to press down, but its becomes harder to press just on an inch or two before touching the floor

That sounds normal as well.

the top part of the clutch is always "springy" as your pedal goes futher towards the floor it gets harder.

the stick gets kind of stuck going into gear 5

Elaborate more please

What does the gearbox do ?

ie

Accept the gear and then spit it back out

or

Hard to get it into gear ? ie just wont go in?

do you have to double clutch to get a gear?

thanks

The gear on a rare occasion doesn't go in and i have to eithier push the gear with more force or double clutch to help it go in...but most of the time its ok.

if the clutch is very heavy it is most likely it needs the moddified parts that some one posted

if you replaced the current clutch which is probably worn aswell (causing stalling) then the clutch should and in nearly all cases that ive done a clutch on one it has made the clutch loads lighter.

hope that helps

I'm sorry mate, but do you mean if i replaced the whole clutch with standard toyota clutch or a specially modified version?

Thank You

toyota parts deptment at dealers can get you them

the moddified parts are standard parts (cluctch n flywheel) that have been moddified from the original to make it better like when you mod a car you do it to make it better.

in this case there was problems with heavy and creaking ctuctches so they brought out the moddified parts.

Thank You for that mate. I got the price for the clutch and flywheel from the dealers and its almost a £1000. This is very expensive and i was wondering if you or anyone else can recommend another place where i could buy the modified version of clutch and flywheel???
