Faulty / Mis-reading Temperature Gauge On A 1995 Gt

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I have a Celica GT 2.0 1995 model, I have to say it is the best car I've ever owned, however I have been experiencing a problem with the temp gauge

The reading goes up and down, mostly always reading max temperature. When it first done this, I jumped out of the car thinking it was overheating, but everything seemed fine, but now, the temp gauge goes right up to max immediately after a cold start. Anyone experienced this, is it just simply a faulty gauge, if so, here's my lack of techy know-how, where is it?!

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Peter

try unplugging the sensor at the side of the main radiator , if the needle dont move , its possibly this sensor.

there are other water sensors on that engine , is it the 3sfe or the 3sge. you have ??

Hi, thanks for the tip, sorry not replied sooner. I tried unplugging the sensors but no joy. I have the 3sge engine according to my owners book, would you be able to suggest anything else? Cheers

look near the throttle body , you will see a white plug ,this is a temp sensor also, not sure if its for auto choke so take the plug off and see if it affects the dash needle ,if it does that sensor maybe your problem.

Yeap, that's the one thanks, is it what the white plug goes into that needs replacing, or is it the plug itself?

Funny you should mention the auto choke, that is playing up a bit at the moment, the car is revving slightly higher, about 1200 rpm even after a 10 mile journey and takes a while to go down to 900, hopefully a new sensor will sort it
