P0420 Error

Hello all,

I have the 2003 toyota avensis with the 1.8 vvti engine. 8 months ago I had the p0420 error so the dealer said that it could be a fuel (dirty fuel) problem and deleted the error but if it occurs again that i would need to replace the manifold, exhaust, part number: 17104-0D101. Well, a few days ago it happened again, the same error. So before I do anything I decided to get some opinions on what to do because I was doing some research online and found out that the repair suggested by the dealer did not solve the problem for some people and the repair is rather costly around 800 euros :o . I also heard that there is a service bulletin regarding the p0420 error for some models.

Your error code is as stated, so you may well be looking at new cat & possible lambda sensor. It will be pricey. As to repair not working for some people, thats why your better of going to Toyota & paying for an Hr's diagnostic to see what faults have logged in the ECM unit. It may also be possible that ECM is at fault.
