First of all thanks in advance to all who offer help and advice.

I have a 2007 Rav D Cat which has just been to dealer for first service at 15000KM, check engine oil level light had been coming on prior to going to dealer but oil level appeared to be OK they said this is normal when service is due?,

First service completed, but light still coming on. The Rav had been parked up for awhile and it turns out a rodent had gotten in to engine bay and chewed at the cable causing light to come on.

As engine cover needs to be removed dealer tells me he needs car for 2 to 3 hours to repair or replace cable.

My question is does anybody know where this cable is located, can I get at it to repair it myself?

Thanks

Gosh - thats different!!!

Have you asked the rodent?

Or tie a string to its tail and get it to do it again??? That way, you'll trace where the wire is!

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than myself will come along soon and give you a proper answer!

The offending ceeature was nowhere to be found, only the remains of his last meal, I doubt if he would have told me anyway :D thanks for the advice though.

Not sure about the oil level warning coming on @ service time, unless it had used some oil and needed a top up.

There is a oil change reminder, perhaps they mean that.

Can find the exact harness routing, if I do, I'll post it. In the diagram below, the oil level warning switch is B48 (near the bottom of the sump) and is a green wire. Other connection on switch is to ground. Green wire willl route back up to the instrument pack.

If they mean the lower sump cover, that comes off in a couple of minutes and the top plastic engine cover is pretty simple. However, I could see it taking some time if they attempted to route in a completely new harness. I would have thought the repair would be simpler and easier if possible.

Remember seeing a TV programme some years ago about young stone martins (in Switzerland I think), that were very fond of chewing vehicle harnesses. Thankfully we only have pine martins here - mainly in Scotland. Oh, and Bothy's there too, but I'm not sure what flavour harness he prefers.

Dunno whether that helps any?

Cheers

Yeah thats great, thanks a lot. I will have a look and see if I can find the problem cable, does the top cover just pop up or has it got clips or screws that need ot be removed.

Welcome to the club. Try putting a mouse trap under the car that might help catch the rodent and then you could interrogate it.

If the DCAT/T180 top plastic engine cover is anything like the standard Diesel, then yes, it just pulls off.

With a hand each side of the cover, a firm put gentle pull upwards should do it. It's located on about 4 "dowels". Anchorman is the expert with this. I think I've seen him do it with every 4.3 RAV I've seen him look under the bonnet of. Must be a mechanical Guru thing.

To be honest though, I think you might see more with the bottom sump cover off. That requires removal of about 10 or 11 clips. They are not to bad to remove if you've got a clip removal tool, but I expect they are easy to break if you haven't got one and depending on how confident you are. Like everything, it's easy after the first time.

Depends where the harness got chewed of course.

forgot to say, there are a couple (at least) of screws/bolts to come out of the bottom cover, near each wheel, should you decide to take that off, but they are fairly obvious.

When in Germany this year I noticed that martin repellent is a poular car accessory. The bgrs love knawing on plastic and rubber and can cause horrendous damage.

Had a quick look today through one of the other flaps on the cover, no obvious signs of damage , didnt manage to take cover off as no proper jack around at the moment and I could not reach the back clips and screws, dont want to risk putting it on blocks. Will have to wait til Monday.

OK OK you got me there - I can't resist pulling that cover off!

What you can't tell from that photo is that chatters has got his laptop hooked up to the ECU while he copies the mapping for his 4.2 and Hoovie is unscrewing the indicators for his next pimp. Out of picture are Duncerduncs who was deflating the run flats, Kingo was in the bar negotiating drinks for us all and that very bad Local Hero was thrilling all those Toyota girlies with his collection of hand wittled wooden artifacts - oh yes we know who their favourite was!!!

Anyway, just going to pull my engine cover off, I mean make a brew.

Decided to have a go today, and managed to fix it, so far the oil warning light has not come on yet, so I am very pleased with myself, it was a bit of a squeeze getting under the car to get the cover off and a bit tricky to get connector opened to get the remains of the chewed cable out but all sorted now so thanks for the help and advice,

Here are a couple of pics of what I found when I removed the cover, bit of a mess, all cleanded up now.

BRILLIANT JOB! You've got to be a genius with a soldering iron. Congratulations

Thanks, I have a small bit of experience with a soldering iron, but a good quality Iron, and good solder are half the battle. Could have done with a bit more room to swing my arms around, but having not been under the bonnet of any car too often I must say there is great satisfaction in in getting something like this, however small, to work out.

Yeah, far easier to back out the crimps from some connectors than others. Glad you are sorted. Thanks for letting us know

Reverse Auto Throttle?

Always reckoned that song was a good example of UB40 going soft. They produced cutting lyrics like "Food for Thought" and "One in Ten" etc and then that. Maybe the lyrics have deep hidden meaning I don't get or maybe they just got rich and a bit lazy .
