Road/off Road Tyres

Am I the only Rav owner who likes a bit of mud? My job in tree surgery and forestry involves muddy fields and forest tracks, nothing too taxing for the poor dear, but the Bridgestones are very slick and will need replacing in a few thou. I do mainly road driving but need more grip on mud. Can anyone recommend a road/off-road tyre that won't cost too much. Wheel size is 235/60R10 100H.

I would fit 16" tyres rather then 10" mini-tyres ;)

Been said a few times before, but the general grabber UHPs seem to work well for those people who have to contend with more challenging conditions then most and they are great on the road as well. They are labelled as M.S tyres as well

hi folks

re:mud tires, yokahama make the 'geolander all terrain +2' which i have fitted to my 2001,these have good open treads, top side wall 'slight' treads and i find they are good enough for green laning and across very wet mud and water.

not too noisy on road,i beleive yokahama are also soon releasing the geolander mud terrain, very open treads, looks chunky and looking forward to having a look at them for mine possibly.

hope this helps

Also might want to consider BFGoodrich T/A KO tyres. Ive run these for a couple of years now due to replacement tyres suffering from punctures all the time. Since the changeover I dont have this problem. They sure are tough. Also used them during slippery snow conditions - Tyres are your cars point of contact on the road. No compromises.

Some reviews. >> reviews <<

hi tropical z

i almost went for bfg all terrain's on mine but found tire, wheel arch liner just too close on full steering lock, worried me about stones in tread catching on inner wheel arch, only about 10mm clearance when i tried them.

what size did you get please?, only wanted bfg's for ages

There are some interesting discussions on the RAV4World forum about tyres and lift-kits, which may be worth a peruse - the Geolanders seem a very popular tyre stateside

Maybe lift it, oversize tyres and away you go down the forest tracks!!!!

The best tyres I've ever come across are black and round, However they do have a small flat area that is always at the bottom of the wheel where it connects with the road or mud if one wishes. They are in fact so good that Mr T fitted a space for a fifth one on the fifth door. See Bothey. Five tyres five doors. What more could a Raver want? :toast:

Thanks again Hoovie. Very nice photo. I enquired about tyres and now I'm thinking about raising my car!! I was kind of settled on General Grabbers, their reviews are good and their price is good, now I'm all confused. BFG T/A look a bit more off road and may hum a little at 70-80, as do Yoko geolanders, and as for Yoko Mud terrain, they've got to be mainly off road. Anyway, glad the thread is still going, thanks all of you.

As a sort of aside that may be relevant, when I had an HR-V, it had 17" wheels with very road orientated tyres on, and it was great on the road.

I fancied trying a little bit of gentle off-roading and bought a set of 15" alloy wheels fitted with Mud+Snow tyres that the seller used on his HR-V in Japan in the winter to go up the mountain roads to go to snowboarding areas.

To cut the story short, the M+S tyres were not that nice to drive on the roads and never felt as sure as the 17" low-profile tyres, so I am personally wary of overly off-road tyres now :(

I really fancy doing a lift as well, I have to say - that lifted RAV4 looks very meaty

Hi,

I went for 215/70/16 which were a straight replacement for my stock 4.2 tyres.

Noisewise, at motorway speeds, there is a humm, but hey thats what the stereo is for! But seriously, it is not bad at all. You can reduce the amount of cabin noise by adding sound deadening materials to places such as the wheel arches- but adding sound deadeners can be a whole new project in itself!

? 3 doors ? :P :P

My landrover has been lifted a good 3" anyway (ie by suspension mods) and I've fitted larger tyres on it - so large I had to cut the front bumpers back to avoid the wheel trying to run over the bumper!! Now, just wait til I get it back from the engine transplant ! Tell you one thing, the noise of the tyres running at 40mph on tar is loud, loud, loud !!

Now, I really wasn't going to get into this. All I wanted was a tyre recommendation. I like the Grabbers, I'd nearly made my mind up. I had quotes, I was focused. Then I see a picture of really chunky Rav, with shiny bars and everything. So......what happens to the vehicle handling and stability if such foolish ideas are implemented. Can someone please tell me this is a silly thing to even contemplate.
