3rd And 4th Gears Slipping?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum but have lurking a while!

Have had my Aygo since April, got it 2 years old, I have the 2006 diesel version and it's just fantastic.

I had my 30,000 service recently, but the past few days I've noticed when I accelerate quickly in 3rd and also 4th gear, the car revs up, then revs up reaally fast before dropping a bit, and then slowly builds up again. Very weird, and this is the first I've noticed it.

Any clues? Anyone else had this happen?

Cheers :)

Clutch has gone/going or very badly adjusted. Get it into a dealer and try and get them to cover it as gone before the 30k service, as you hope they would have spotted it when they serviced it.

So yeh... i take it to the garage and they spend a whole morning checking it out, only to say "we couldn't find anything wrong with it". They ran their computer diagnostic thing through it to clear any problems, and admittedly after I drove out of the garage I thought the problem had cleared, but it returned. And after a long drive today, the problem is definitely still there. Sometimes 3rd gear just doesn't have the power at all, and I've noticed it slip in 5th gear too.

This problem never occured until I left them to fit my rear mud flaps, grr.

And also, ever since I got the car back back from the garage, I've been smelling a strong fuel/oil smell inside, and there is a definite oil leak (marks left under the car).

It frustrates me that i never had any problems with my little care since taking it for it's first service!!! I'll take it back, but likely they'll still not find anything wrong with the clutch and I'll be left with an underperforming Aygo.

Any tips?? Should I be trying a different Toyota garage??

Take it back as there is no way that I know of where a computer can diagnose a slipping clutch

Get one of the mechanics to go out on a test drive with you at the wheel.... then show him or her what happens

Be persistent but polite and I am sure you will win the day.... good luck

Still sounds like a dead/dying clutch, also sounds like it only happens when it gets warm.

Make sure that the fault you are reporting is recorded on Toyotas system. that way if it does fail outside warranty you have evidence that you reported it before hand.

I had a similar issue on my old bike 3/4th gear didn't feel right, they found nothing, a month or two out of warranty there's a loud bang and half the teeth from the 4th gear are ripped off.

thanks for the replies guys, i've actually not noticed the gears problem over the past week, but what i HAVE noticed, is a strong oil smell in the car while I'm driving. There is also an oil leak which leaves oil under the car while parked....

So I took it to my toyota garage today, and they say my injector needs replacing... which is covered by the warranty thank god. but i wondered if this might be the reason for my lack of power in the gears??

anyway, this replacement will happen soon i hope, and I'll be keeping an eye on the performance after it's fixed.....
