Fulltime 4 Wheel Drive

Recommended Posts

Posted

I just took my first ever vacation with my Super Custom. Had it to the Coast of Kenya. Tried to do some 4 wheeling on the sand and discovered that there seemed to be no traction coming from the front wheels.... I need to understand how the Full time 4 wheel drive works. For instance, is there any way to engage or dis-engage it? I have no manual since it is imported used from Japan. Any knowledge of how it works or should work will be most helpful.

For some background, see 4wd versus Awd. Apparently Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) 4wds are designed for snowy skifield roads. They don't do "proper" 4wding in Japan.

It is rumoured that some models have a fuse that disables the Awd system, turning the vehicle into a front wheel drive. Some owners install a switch so they can run in the more fuel-efficient Fwd mode, only enabling Awd when they think they need it. Or they just pull the fuse.

If you have rear wheel drive only, then this is probably not the case. But it wouldn't hurt to check for a missing or blown fuse.
