Reverse Light

Hello one and all!

Can I ask if anybody else finds the one reverse light on the Avensis not quite enough to illuminate the area behind the car?

(Mine is 2004 T3-X)

I am a little bemused why the designers saw fit to only have one.

My other question is does anyone have any ideas on how to improve this? Is there a "brighter" bulb I can use instead? Or is it worth looking at buying an after market light to add onto the rear of the car somewhere, perhaps at the bottom of the bumper..... has anyone in fact done this?!

Interested to hear your thoughts - thanks very much!

Mike

Reverse lights are there to alert people that you are about to reverse not to illuminate behind. If you need it to be brighter though I suppose you could temporarily turn your rear fog lamp on, there pretty bright.

To carinfront,

I think you will find it is the law to have one reverse & one fog light fitted to cars, unlesss you have older model from the 80's. People used to complain older vehicles with two fog lights looked like driver in front had his brakes on all the time. You can not have this confusion anymore, so the blame lays with the fog light or single foglight. As suggested by above forum user, that's your answer.

Interesting folks, thanks for taking the time to reply.

Not entirely sure it is the law to have one reverse and one fog light. The reverse light is not part of the MOT test, nor is there a specified requirement for just one lamp under the Road Vehicles Lighting Regs 1989 - which states no more than two reversing lamps to be fitted. Again no restrictions regarding its intensity, or positioning. Likewise the Regs allow for one or two rear fog lights (albeit with positioning restrictions)

I know that some cars with two rear fogs do look like they have their brakes on all the time, but thankfully that is not an issue with the Avensis.

This is why I think the reverse lamps do play an important part other than lettign someone know behind you of your intention to reverse. If at night you cant see the area around the back of your car, then reversing with one light only makes it a trifle harder! I have used my rear fog light as well to assist in illumination, but that in itself contravenes the law unless visibility is so low requiring them to be used - an interesting conversation with the police could be had there!

Thanks again
