I obviously don't know anything about my car, Mr T rang up today to advise me they think there is a problem with my fuel rail and that they have ordered the parts and will fit it this evening ready for collection tomorrow...

... thats all well and good but could someone please explain what the fuel rail does?

Thanks.

the fuel rail carries fuel to the fuel injectors (they fit into the fuel rail)

is the part being replaced under warranty or have you got to pay for it?

if you have to pay then ask for more info, other than leaking there is not a lot to go wrong with one.

Its under warranty so its not too bad... but my concern was could the pistons be damaged from the fuel rail not working properly ie dry out!!!

No, the fuel rail is just a pressure chamber with high pressure diesel, and where the injectors are connected. I believe it's just a small crack or something that might cause problems for you in the future if not fixed. If it would have leaked, then you would have seen an increase in fuel consumption. A faulty fuel rail shouldn't cause any major damage to your engine.
