Avensis Auto Mpg Advice

Hi from a new member.

I'm currently considering buying myself an Avensis, probably 3-5 years old. I've not had an auto for a while and I think I want one this time. However I've gotten used to diesel fuel economy over recent years and want to do some homework on how the sums would add up running a petrol. Obviously diesel is about 15% more expensive these days so it might work out fairly close.

I currently have a Jaguar X Type diesel and it's only returning about 42 mpg, so by my count I could run a petrol at about 36mpg for similar fuel costs. My daily commute is 40 miles on mainly empty roads at 50mph or so.

As a secondary note would the 2.0 diesel return it's claimed 50mpg on the above mentioned commute?

I'd be grateful for any members' input and experiences.

I have a 2007 2 ltr auto tiptronic Avensis and it gives about 33 mpg on the type of driving that you intend. My experience of manufacturers' figures on mpg are not reliable as they are achieved using simulated driving on rollers. I changed from a diesel, when renewing because I do low mileage and would not recover the greater cost of a diesel car in the three years that I keep them.

I previously had a 2003 model 2.0 D4D and now have a 2008 2.2 D4D and think that you should acheive 50 mpg on your commute.

I have a 1.8 auto and my average mpg is 33 calculated. The trip computer puts it at 36.6. Regular run is 35 miles to work 20 miles motorway, 10 miles fast country roads and then 5 miles crawl. Hope this helps.

1.8 petrol auto. About 15 miles return trip on urban roads per day. Average 30 mpg (32 mpg when schools are out). Long motorway trips touring the continent, 46 mpg average with a fully loaded car. Calculated against the computer, the figures have never been more than 1 mpg out (computer being more generous although I rely on the Range given by the computer and calculations made when this is indicating 0 miles left and then full tanked). Hope this helps, me and the wife went through a phase of watching the mpg and learning to drive the car properly because we were averaging 22-24 mpg when we first got the car!

I don't think Toyota does diesel automatics unless the 2009 avensis is offering it.

Hi and thanks for the replies so far.

So I'm estimating that I'll struggle to get low 30's mpg from the 2.0, but perhaps towards mid to high 30's from the 1.8 on my quiet commute roads.

On the other hand I'll get 50 from the diesel. hmmmm is that 40% or so drop in fuel economy worth it for an auto? Also the road tax will be more expensive for the petrol.

It's exactly the "food for thought" I was looking for.

Thanks again.

Hi again,

Just an update to let you know I've eventually bought myself an 05 plate T2 petrol manual. I would've gone for an auto but there's not many around and the manual drives lovely. I've only had it a day or two so it's early days yet, but so far I'm impressed. Hopefully it'll be as reliable as the Toyota's I owned in yesteryears and I'll not need the forum much lol.

I've got a question already but will star a new thread on it.

Thanks again for the info :)
