Engine Management Light Just Came On

as the title says my engine management light has just came on. I was out a drive and parked up for a while went to start the car and had to end up getting a jump start I know I needed a new Battery but now the engine management light coming on makes me worry.. how major could this be..? I heard I need to go somewhere with a engine diagnostic machine... will my local toyota dealer have one and how much will the charge..?

you can run a diagnostic yourself using nothing more than a paper clip and reading a code from flashing lights on the dashboard.
