3door / 5 Door - Which To Choose

Hi,

Just joined this forum and looking to purchase a Rav 4. Still undecided whether to go for the 3 or 5 door version.

We have two large dogs. Would they fit in the boot of the 3 door i.e. do the chairs go forward in the 3 - door version. It would be great if anybody have some photos of the 3 door Rav4 boot - possibly with the chairs right forward.

Is MPG the same for the 3 and 5 door versions?

Thanks.

Hi there Tim, and welcome to the Rav world. I have owned a series 2 Rav 3 door, and the current model an 07 series 3 five door. Both vehicles were diesel variations, and the fuel consumption on both the 3 door and my present vehicle is outstanding. We are looking at 50 m.p.g. on normal driving for both cars. From my experience, I gather the fuel figures on the petrol models are nowhere near as good, and could show a difference of as much as 20 m.p.g. under pressure driving. The rear seats fold down in both series 2 and 3, thus making sufficient space for your dogs, but this would be on the assumption you were not carrying any rear seat passengers, although as the seats fold individually, carrying a child in the back would be o.k.

The diesel cars are worth the extra money. Recently after a long journey in heavy traffic I came off the M4 at Newport on to the A449 Abergavenny dual carriageway, where the traffic was very light, and as I was in relax mode, I did not realise what speed I was doing until i looked at the speedo; and I was astounded that it read 100 m.p.h. That demonstrates what an effortless engine the 2.2 is,

The seat backs tilt to make a little more room in the back while still being able to use the read seats. The whole seat foles and tilts forward to make the boot space bigger but obviously stops the rear seats being used.

I would think two large dogs in the rear boot space of a 3 door RAV4 with the rear seats in use would be most uncomfortable for them

Life will sure be far too short if you make a habit of driving like that, let us hope that not too many other people are taken out as well !!!

Shouldn't pets always be transported in cages that are fixed to the chassis? In that case, you need to remove the rear seats on both models to fit something like that.

John, if you've done 400 posts then you should know Bothy's humour by now.

He doesn't race his Rav on a public road.

Back to the OP, I have the 5 door 4.2 and the back seats are easy to take out. Would be ideal for 2 dogs IMO.

With suitable dog guard of course. Also the rear sill is quite low so your large dogs would jump in and out easliy.

Here's our dog (the big fella, Bailey, with the "lovelypaw") in the back of my wife's Rav4.2 with his girlfriend, Molly. Yes, they are wet and sandy having been swimming in the sea..... She only hopped in to have her photo taken, because I wouldn't feel comfortable with them both travelling in the back with the rear seats up (as they are in the photo). There's plenty of room for one, two would fit, but I doubt it'd be very confortable. That's why I travel in the front.....

:o If you were really doing 100mph on a dual carriageway without realising it you are a danger to the general public! And really should look hard and deep to yourself whether or not you should be driving at all!

ma RAV does 100mph in 3rd gear

Seriously Bothy, I would have thought you would have been dissapointed by the fact that you seem to have 'long' gearing. Surely for the 1/4 mile sprint runs you built the cars for you need 'short' gearing to keep the rev's up high and the turbo always on boost.

John, if you've done 400 posts then you should know Bothy's humour by now.

Mostly in the 'Word Association" thread

nae bother - the turbo set up the noo has the turbo kicking in at quite low revs so I don't need 3500rpm...... but as you say, I have altered the gearing by using small diameter wheels/tyres setup....so the revs normally run along at 3000- 6500 in any gear.

Thanks for all the replies.

Robert - is that a 3 door?

After looking over the weekend, we have decided on getting a 5 door Rav-4. Just need to find one within our budget now. Looking for either a petrol or diesel about 5 years old.
