Cambelt Change

Hi all,

just joined this site on behalf of my folks as they haven't a computer. They have bought a 2002 Rav 4 diesel (1CD-FTV engine) from a relative with full dealer service history and 48k on the clock. The seller has informed them its really due for a cambelt change due to age not mileage. Is this an expensive job to do please. Has any one fitted Gates cambelts instead of Toyota ones as I have a contact for Gates belts. Any other known faults at this kind of mileage ?

Cheers in advance

Can't comment on the Toyota ones as I've never done it or had it done. As for the gates one's, well at work we used to

supply Gates with some machined parts. And that's how I got a bit of info on them. Their plant in Dumfries in the Scottish

borders supplies the likes of BMW so I guess quality is good (especially for a company that started off making wellies :o )

The belts are fairly reasonable, I think there are 3 if you count the auxilliary belt. PM kingo on here for a price, he'll see you right. I had mine done when my water pump began to weep and I had it replaced under warranty so I didn't pay for any labour. May be worth checking yours at the same time it is fairly common I believe, just look for pink fur around the pump area

Gates make world class belts and you should not be apprehensive about fitting one. If you have a contact buy the belts and then get a good independant to fit them. You will save some money that way.
