Please help the old and befuddled.......what is GAP insurance? I've been driving for 40 years but never heard of it. I'm guessing from the above posts that it covers you for loss of value of the car if it's written off.

I had GAP insurance on my Yaris - it got written off after only 9 months and without the GAP I'd still be in debt on a car that is in the big mechanics in the sky....

It basically covers the shortfall of what you owe from a write off.... so the insurance pays out x amount (the cars current market value) but you'll still have x amount remaining - the GAP covers the remaining amount therefore paying off your debt in full.

I have it on my Aygo too - better to be safe than sorry!

GAP = Guaranteed Asset Protection = If your car is written off within 3 years the GAP insurance either makes up the difference between what the insurance company offer you and the cost of what you owe the finance company

OR If you have bought the car cash the GAP insurance makes up the money the insurance company offer you to the amount originally paid for the car............(The Invoiced price)

In theory it means that you should be able to go out and purchase a replacement vehicle quite quickly

My sons premium for the Invoiced price cover was about just over £100...................bought from a broker not Toyota........they wanted just under £400 for the same cover

Did I read the OP right?

£1500 payout? That's madness and should have been challenged.

I think the GAP insurance is a con personally.

If I write-off a 3 year old car I should get the funds to replace it with a car of a similar value, age and condition. If the insurance company make a substandard offer reject it and take it up with the ombudsman, or take them to a small claims court.

Every year they ask you for the current value of your car and insure it based on that value, if they then turn around and say the vehicle is worth 50% that amount they have mis-siold you the insurance policy in the first place.

The only extra I do make sure I get on my insurance is the legal protection, can be very useful. I doubt you could set them on the insurance company though.

my wife said no to GAP with Toyota and I went online and got it for £75

toyota dealer wanted 400 nuggets, then dropped it to 299, funny that

also with PPI always go to a broker elsewhere, another BIG saving. I recommened ANT Insurance for sick or unemployment insurance.

oh thats how much i ended up with back in my pocket. the rest paid off the finance which was 3000 and my excess came out of it to so i got offered 4800 for my aygo which had very high mileage. i didnt challenge that cos i saw aygos the same age for less on auto trader ;) all in all pretty good x

With insurance you pay for what you get. Paying for piece of mind.

Actually you don't.

Or do you?

Who knows?

Someone always will undercut a quote on the internet and people will always say they got a better deal, but will they be actually able to make a good claim and live happily ever after, eh Steve?

Or will the people who paid extra ? Actually, nobody knows.

That's a thing about insurance, you are throwing the dice.

The interesting thing of course is that not only are you throwing the dice, the insurance companies, come 2009, are also throwing the dice.

CAVEAT EMPTOR

Good luck :)

Regards

Andy

PS I have GAP with Toyota but as it is monthly about what I spend a weekend on beer at least I know it is not damaging my liver .....

Except if you read it further they actually got £4800 from the insurance payout which seems Ok considering the age of the car etc.

Ah, that makes much more sense!

Crikey! £4800 is excellent to be fair. TBH, I paid £5999 for mine two years ago now and if someone offered me that after a crash I'd be very happy.

I think GAP for the Aygo is rather pointless.

Product replacement insurance, GAP insurance, it seems everything we buy these days is either going to fall apart or be written off within the first year of ownership, yes there are occasions when the worst case scenario happens but those odds are very small. Each time I have bought a new car or any product, then have been given the hard sell with this "insurance", I think of how many cars I have written off in my lifetime (long at that  )....None, or how many products have failed in the first year.......None that I know of and if they have the normal warranty covered them.

If people feel the need to insure their insurance, thats fine, I would rather spend it on better things. ;)

lol if u can easily get credit i guess it pointless but toyota were the only ppl in the world to give me any form of credit...prob cos and only cos i crashed mine!! and they r the only ppl i manage to pay on time cos im rubbish with bills lol but i was very lucky! i was considering an mg zr if i cudnt get finance but i still had to find another 1500 for that minimum and ive been without a car for 1 month already! :( so gap was at the top of my list this time just in case! hehe

i guess it comes down to personal choice at the end of the day :) i work so far away its not easy to just jump on a bus so i rely on my car and i must be safe! and i like new shiny things so gap for me is excellent now...b4 i didnt care but my accident cudnt be avoided and these things happen...once the money has been paid i dont care if its not used. it just eases my mind hehe and if that cost 350 to do that well thats 350 well spent hehe x
