Cold Idle No Good

Howdy - i need some help on how to tweak the cold start / idle. Its a pig to start from cold, but great when its warm.

I have to turn the key and dab the throttle just as the engine fires. Too early on the pedal and it wont start. Too late and the engine wont start. If i DO manage to catch it first time, its hit or miss even then as i have to keep dabbing the pedal or it will cut out. Too heavy on the dab and it will cut out. But one thing is for certain when i get it right, and that is i cant drive away for at least 1 or 2 minutes. Nearer 2 in this freezing weather.

Help ! My wagon is the Corolla 1.6 Auto Exec G reg hatchback or fastback ( not sure )
