2003 Yaris T-sport

Hi, just joined up as I've recently bought a 2003 Yaris T-Sport and have a couple of queries, this seems like a good place to ask.

I've noticed that when it's fired up from cold the tickover is about 2000 rpm. Within a couple of minutes it drops down to about 1000 rpm, and then when it is fully warmed up it's about 750rpm, which seems a bit low. Also I noticed that the revs seem to 'stick' when you put the clutch in to change gear. I asked friend with one about this, he said his also does it, so I assumed it was normal, but now I'm not so sure. Is this tickover pattern correct, or if not is it a common fault, and more importantly easy to fix?

I don't know if the revs not dropping between gear changes is linked to the clutch, which I think might need replacing (the car has only done 56k though) as it is quite heavy and you need to push it right into the carpet to change gear, especially from 1st to 2nd. Is this normal? Or is a new clutch at 56k about right?

Any thoughts/advice would be graefully received.

Thanks

Matt

My car also idles at 2000 when starting up cold. I'm quite sure this is normal as the temperature light goes off when it is able to idle at below 800. So I always assumed it idled high to keep it from stalling.

As for the sticking problem, I think it could be due to the close ratio gearbox? I read somewhere there was only a difference of about 750 rpm. I don't know if that's what you're after or if you actually mean the needle is frozen still between changing gears.

Thanks for this, perhaps the high tickover from cold is right then. With regards to the revs 'sticking' between gearchanges, what I mean is when you put the clutch in to change gear the revs don't drop as you would expect, but stay at the rpm they were before you went to change gear. This could be to do with the close ratio box, or as I mentioned in my original post it could be because the clutch is worn.

Hiya, just saw your post and signed up myself, the idling is high to start off with the tsport model alone, had my tsport about 18 months now, its done it in 3 different services before and after no issues whatsoever. The engine will high rev simply because its a sports model, as it doesnt do it on the 1.3 or 1.0 litres that ive driven previous having owned a 1.0. As for the awkward gear change from 1st to 2nd, thats common it happens in every car, have no idea why that is, but it is normal for it to do it, the gearbox is different in the Tsport to the other models and the problem is only with the Tsport. Also your reverse gear will either already be like it, or eventually be like it, so just to let you know not to worry, your clutch and gearbox are fine :P

Thanks for the reply, reassuring to know that these things are common. I might try getting the clutch done at some point anyway, as I can get it done by a mate in the trade relatively cheaply, and it might help me pull away a bit more smoothly in the mornings when the car is cold!

Yeh i know, i was a bit scared about it at first especially the first to second gear problem, that still worries me now but i just think its how it is, no point in changing it, costs more money than its worth then. And yeh get a new clutch it will defo pull off better mates just done that with his SR and its much better, but you get more wheelspin which in the weather we are having at the moment is what you dont want hehe :P

Let me know if you get it how it goes, was gona do the works to my tsport, now im trading it in :D

The revs are high when the car is cold due to the automatic choke (maybe its called something else these days) which keeps the revs higher than normal until the engine warms up. In the olden days you had a manual choke you had to pull out and then put in once warmed up.

As for the revs not dipping when changing gear... do you have the air con on? The amount of power the air con saps on the tsport is untrue.

The clutch pedal can be adjusted to raise the biting point if it's too low. Don't know how but Toyota adjusted mine.

The Revs not dipping while putting your clutch down is not right, i tested it earlier on last night to double check and mine go back down to 0-400 didnt pay much attention, but i suggest you get it checked over, if your engines ticking over more than it should be could be a serious problem, also double check your oil TSports rinse oil, its a right pain but worth it seens as the cars indestructable :D
