Water Pump? Maybe

If the water pump starts to go does it start to make a rattling sound or does it start to leak coolant out? I do know it can leak when it starts to go but does this always happen? On starting my car when cold there is a metallic kind of lets say rattle for now until i can think of a better word to describe it, however its been like this for a while and from what i can see nothing is being affected. From just using your ears it sounds like its coming from the cams or alternator but i used a my ear against a screwdriver and i heard it best when i put it on the oil cooler. Havent investigated much so i was thinking maybe its the water pump as its not far from the oil cooler however i havent had any over heating problems. The sound isnt heavy enough to be something major and my friend has already had a quick goosey at it he said its not a major bearing or anything. You can only really hear it in low revs and when in the cabin you can hear it better i would say and when you pull away it sounds quite diesel'ie.

any ideas?

I'll try and make a video tomorrow

Is there any water coming out of the exhaust?? Let the car idle and rev it a few times to see.

If you are loosing coolant but have no leaks then it will more than likely be the water pump.

My old Starlet did this. Filled coolant up and after a month or so it would be nearly empty but no leakage or head gasket failure, however cup fulls of water coming out of the exhaust.

I'm in need of a new water pump in my gen7. I have same noise, does it go away when car is warmed up,. also when cold, does it get louder when ya accelerate? Its a good chance its the pump or maybe one of the belts?

I thought it was my altenator aswell, but from further inspection it looks like eithir one. Process of elimination.

Yeh it goes away when warmed up and gets louder when u rev until u get into high revs when u just cant hear it. Yeh its not the alternator i put the screwdriver against the alternator and listened with my ear just making its normal whirring sound. Cheers mate, big help

You will get moisture out of the exhaust at this time of year anyway, your looking for "blasts" of water when you rev the engine.

Im in Grantham mate, not to far from Peterborough ;)

dont know if you got it sorted or not but i had the same thing 3week ago. the seal had gone in the hydrolic cam belt tensioner. causing a really loud rattle. cost me about 200 for new one, belt and fitting. if you get some one to gently rev the engine look at the tensioner and youll be able to see if thats what is causing the problem. hope this helps.

Yeh 350 is the limit where u really have to start changing some major internal components. I am doing the samething as you but i am really big on maintenance mainly because i destroyed my first engine, cracked block, crashed my car in stamford when i was ******, really stupid thing to do but never got caught. I rebuilt the front end got her working again but it kept over heating and i checked everything until i yanked the engine out, so it has made me pretty paranoid about keeping my engine in good condition. Do you put your cat back on for your mot or you got a garage who will let you get away with it? I always go to that garage in grantham top of that main road that the fire station is on, near the roundabout, really well priced indeed. There is a cheap respray place down that road well it looks like someones drive way next to the fire station right at the bottom, 600 quid for a front end respray and a massive dent knocked out on the front wing.

No the garage does the majority of work on my car because I don't have the space, equipment or time to do anything other than small bits & bobs!!

I use Manor services for any work on the car, they do motorsport preparation and run a couple of rally cars in events around the country.

Cat has to go back in for MOT time :(

I found that the body shop near the fire station charge extortionate prices, £300 to respray a rear bumper for a Starlet GT :o

£90 for front and rear bumpers on a 1999 escort up here . £600 will get you a full car spray and a valet to boot.

Oh, might be because im in the forces and he is ex forces, just say ur in the air force next time. Try the spray shop on RAF Cottesmore they are pretty much as cheap as booster is saying but they take ages thats why i dont use them.

Theres a guy out near Grimsthorpe who sprays cars in an old barn and hes !Removed! good, works by himself so takes a few weeks or so but only charges around £800 for a full respray and his work is top notch

Cheers for that tip mate there was only one bolt in the hyd tensioner instead of 2 but i have changed it anyway so hopefully this was making the rattle.
