Hi Having owend a 4.1 Gx auto for ten years i have just got a 4.2 XTR petrol with 55k on the clock 2005 model.

when i start it up from cold it seams a bit noisy like a rattle for about 5 mins untill it is warm ,

i know it has a chain instead of a belt, is this this reason, or do i need to have it looked at i used to have a honda that was the same

many thanks alan

Ps Great site only just found it

Welcome to the club Alan.

This observation does come up quite frequently for both petrol and diesel. The RAV does have a reputation for being noisy (I am talking comparitively as some will argue they don't find it so). If you read reviews for the newer 4.3 the journalists often say the same.

I think you can relax and enjoy your new vehicle.

Cheers.

Hello and welcome Alan.

I'm in the opposite camp - I find mine surprisingly quiet. More so after the last service.

Haven't notice any difference on a cold morning but not really been looking for it either.

I used to live in that "other place" - just over the border so I know Darwen reasonably well.

Thats My Next Plan On Friday I hope.

Going back to dealers on Friday on another matter will ask them as well.

I am not to worried, It's not a bad noise it's just a noise ,noise if you know what i mean.

If it is something i will try to blag it under warranty  Toyota warranty's are good Right ????

Usually OK with warranty and at the moment the workshop is very important to the dealer as they are not selling cars.

Good luck.

Have a 4.2 with 40k and thought I had bought a diesel, very noisey from cold and then OK. Looked at the US sister site and the same problem is posted there, no mention of an answer, all seem to agree that it is "normal".

If you do find a cure please let me know as I still cringe when pulling away in the cold,,,,see a bone dry cam in my brain, fingers crosses all is well.

Just got back from the dealers, They have done the brakes as they said they would.

They had the car for two days, To start it from cold.

The mechanic Sorry i mean technician

Said he could not hear anything unusual but he would let it cool down and try again this afternoon witch he did

with the service manager and both say nothing is amiss.

Thinking back to the day i took it in that morning i did seam i little quieter And also today when i picked it up both started from cold so my questions are.

1) Do you think i might be getting used to the noise and dont notice it as much?

2) my other rav is a 4.1 with a timing belt instead of a chain and it's that i can hear ?

3) I know for a fact it was sat in the showroom for at least 2 months without turning a wheel

could this have made it sound noisy because the oily bits had run dry, now its been run round for a few days it's now

well oiled so to speak ?

Many Thanks

Alan

OK Alan,

Mine does it most mornings and soon forget about the problem when warmed up. Don't think mine is the chain, sound very very similar to a diesel knock/tap. In my minds eye I would say it was a tappet with a shortage of hydraulic lift. Other people say it is injector knock.....what ever that is.

I have had the car 12mths and it has got no worse...mind you it has got no better either....

Please keep me posted as to the noise on the next cold morning.

Cheers

John
