Sounds like quite a good car but isnt a bit risky with gearbox trouble, it may just be nothing you could put some top notch oil in there and it maybe fine you want to take the chance? stage 2 turbo very impressive. How much is it and how much u looking to spend?

Looks like a sound enough car, if you think you can sort the problems out then go for it.

Will you be test driving it first? What about getting it inspected etc??

Hi m8 just too let you know that if this is a uk car at that age look for rust (hard) inner sills lift carpet if you can. They are bad places for them aswell as arches and round sun roof if it has one. The gearbox is a commen problem with the st185 so be ready to change it. Good maybe up to 120k, pig of a job to do and not cheap if you are paying a garage to do for you. If you have to change then get one from a st205 much better , stronger and is a straight swap also use at least an exedy organic clutch. Check for oil leaks down the back of the head and block/gearbox as the rocker gasket leaks at the rear corner by the dizzy. Then there is the old power steering problems that they all love to have and thats a fact and also another pig of a job, if the pump goes DO NOT use a second hand one take it from me i have done it TWICE and now need another one.Toyota pump is only good for about 70k so all the broken cars will have the same bad pump. You will be lucky to get one at that mileage not to need a rack too which is best changed with engine out. Can be done with it in but you need to stip out parts of the gear/transfer box. The bulkhead where the rack mounts to on the left hand side is also prone to cracking and is definatly a engine out job, this is because they press all the steel parts which make up the whole bulkhead and the stress in the metal is much worse in this area .Then there is the rear diff mount problem if it clonks on gear change or de-acceleration also floor vibration from the rear then its diff mounts not a bad job but can be dear if you use mr t oem parts £300+ iirc. General things are as all cars brakes ,wheel bearings ,link rods (arb) etc. Make sure you check the ecu for error codes there are how to's on this at all gt4 web/owners sites gt4oc gt4ec celica club ect, its very easy to do just a paper clip can do it but you need someone in the car to count the number of flashes from the ecu light on the dash. Head gasket on these cars are crap too but the one you are looking at has had one done so big plus point.

Hope that has scared the pants off you because in the real world these cars are high maintence and are not cheap to run 24 mpg at best. If you get one that is fine then all well and good happy motoring but it will indeed reach into your wallet and pull your pants down. So be very cautious when buying and look hard these cars are not selling well at the moment so a bargin can be had dont rush in at the first one you see. Look on the forums of said clubs you will find one or at least some very useful advice.

Sorry to be so blunt but i am talking from experiance and thought you should know because i have owned three of them .

I forgot to say that i also saw that car you are looking at on eBay with much interest as its all the same as my one i have now. Although mine is the import model same colour and widebody smart looking . The one thing is that this is a bit old and for the money you could find a later one somewhere. Although it does have leather trim and some goodies so that may make up for the age in the eyes of some people.

Just a thought ;)

The other thing i thought of is the gearbox try a new slave cylinder first easy job only about £40 (ADL blueprint) new fluid may help.

I like the garden, great size. The forums i use is this one, 6gc.net which is the same as this but only about celicas and gt4oc.net which is probably where you will find more of the hardcore celica people and more info but there is a bit of nattering goes on in there but from what ronnaus has told you it seems pretty top notch info on the 185. Personally i prefer this site as its quite easy going, user friendly and you get different opinions from different car users

useful sites

http://www.gt4dc.co.uk/

http://www.gtfours.co.uk/ great site got loads of how to guides, pictures, great way to boost your knowledge

Now that has to be the most extensive list of 185 issues I've ever seen posted anywhere LOL. I only have one quam and that's the mpg, I averaged around 32 and once hit 40 mpg from a tank full! I maintaned that car to the highest standard I could afford and got an e-manage piggy back fitted to aid this.

As for the four your going to see ask why they fitted such a thick gasket, the normal replacement for a paper gasket is only 1.2/4mm, the only reason I can think off is so they could run more boost which leads onto low down rpm drivability issues and if it has run crazy boost without some form of engine management could mean a motor replacement could be required soon

You must of had one of the most economical gt4s ever and or a very lite foot. on a run they are much better i went from essex to wiltshire and back on about 55-60 pounds of super unleaded cant remember miles but its about 400 ish give or take.

GT forbes have seen you around before is it on the celica club or the oc ??
