If the air filter looks clean and was done last year don't worry about that any more.

How much fuel did you put in? If you have the details we'll just check that the online converter was right (it hasn't used US gallons or something odd).

If it really is using too much fuel I would expect to see quite a lot of black smoke and that could point to the injectors or turbo.

The headlight part isn't replaceable. It is fitted during the headlight assembly and if missing it will fail the MOT. If you can't fix it you need to look out for another headlight. You could try ebay or Kingo will sell you a new one at a discounted rate.

Right....I've just checked a receipt i have from the other day when i put a tenner in. Now is says that £10 is 10.32 litres and i still have a little left and the mileometer is showing 67.4miles, so i pressume within the next say 10miles or so, i would expect to see the fuel light come on.

Using the online calculator that i used before (http://www.eforecourt.com/calc_mpg.htm) that works out at 33.04mpg.

Think what i'll do is wait till the light comes on then see what it is then if i can afford too, fill her up again and see how many miles a full tank lasts. I put in £47 before so that works out at 48.50litres, and it dont take a mathamatition to work out that if i have done 70miles on a tenner before i've even run out then times that by 4.7, it works out at 329miles......more than the 275 odd that i did on the previous tank!!

Confused.......will keep you up to date with what happens ;)

Doh! Why did I bother?

When considering MPG, don't forget side steps, mud flaps and roof bars etc add drag [side steps add considerable weight too - the steps are pretty light but the supports are 2" angle iron and run full length on the 4.3]

I reckon I took a 0.5 MPG hit when I fitted mine

I think I can live with that!:thumbsup:

Mine are a plastic compound or something of that type... so lighter... make it 0.2 mpg.....

Daddy Cool,

Glad I browsed this topic, cos I have exactly the same problem with my UK imported XT3 D-4D(2003). I was just about to call Toyota about this.

I'm getting 300 - 320 miles on a full tank, works out at between 28-30mpg :( .

I dont do town driving, its all Motorway legal speeds, Tyre pressures are all fine, I dont have roof bars, or mud flaps or anything to affect MPG. I tread gingerly on the throttle (more to save licence than anything else). I tend not to let it idle to heat up. The car has low mileage, and full toyota service history.

On long runs (mainly Dublin to Cork and back), fuel consumption barely improves.

Such was my desparation, I bought (at great cost) a Tunit tuner, but still only managing to get 320 miles on a tank (or 30mpg- 10.5 Gal or 48 litres approx). This is at best and the figure is often sub 300miles/tankfull.

My maths is correct- 1 gal = 4.54 litres, 320/10.5 = 30mpg).

At first light, I will check Air Filter, then make the call to (rip-off) Toyota.

Since I got my Rav, I have done just over 800 miles of commuting and general running around. A lot of my travelling is on motorway and A roads, so I am expecting to get fairly good MPG. The on board computer is showing an average of 47 MPG. Assuming that it is reasonably accurate, I am pretty chuffed with that. I haven't had the chance to carry out proper check filling the tank and calculating usage manually yet. Anyone know if the onboard computer can be believed?

The OBC is usually pretty optimistic about fuel consumption. From my own observations, and I have all the data since I bought the RAV, 47 on the OBC is probably between 38 and 41 if you measure it using the brim-to-brim method. Certainly not bad for round town but on a longer run on the open road or motorway you should be getting high 40's which will probably be nearly 60 on the OBC. Just had my worst tankful ever - 38.5. LH is spot on about measuring the MPG at this time of year and I think that this "low" reflects this.
