i have a 1990 toyota celica 2lt engine, its a import,

when driving after about 15mins the Battery light comes on and so does a light that i think signalfied that the car is over heating, ive not got a manual so im not sure, but it is placed just above the Battery light on the left hand side of the display dash,, if i carry on driving after awhile the car just cuts out, i leave it for couple of hours to cool down but then i find my Battery as also been flattened,

this is wot ive tryed

*New battery,

*DIfferent mixtures of water/coolent

someone as said it might be the alternator, but would that cause the car to overheat like it is? or could it be a sensor of somesort?

please help as i realy dont wanna sell this car but with me being a family man i need something realiable,

Thanks

sounds to me like you've got a belt proble cos i think i'm right but corect me if i'm wrong but dosent the alternator belt also run the water pump so u would kill the Battery and overheat

If its a gt4 im pretty sure the cambelt runs the water pump like on my st205 not sure about the other models would think it would be the same

here is a pic of a car simular to mine http://www.thomasautoworld.com/images/car%...20Celica%20.jpg

could it be the case of just tightning up my cambelt or drive belt? or is that a job for a pro to do?

i have also noticed that the fan dont kick in and if it does its only for 20secs before it goes off, thats what made me think it might of been a sensor,

also on the dash u get a Battery meter telling u what ur Battery voltage is, when the lights come on the Battery drops to 12v and slower drops until the car just cuts out.

if it's your Battery light and CAT overheating warning light then it's your altonator thats the problem, does the water temperature gague rise up at all? i wouldn't have thought it would with this fault. does your 'fan' belt squeel at all?

have the charge at the Battery measured with engine running, test gauge can be bought for £6 ish . ( standard voltmeter )

if the Battery itself is running hot and dry then chances are the voltage regulator inside the alternator is shot and can be throwing out something like 20 volts into a 12 volt cell

on these cars theres are volt meter on the dash its self, before the lights come on to signalfie a problem the bat meter reads about 14v-16v, but as soon as the lights come on it drops to 12v and just slowly gets lower and lower till the car cuts out, then i need to wait for the engine to cool down then get jump started,

ive also tryed starting the car with the Battery i hav in now then swapping the bettery over with a brandnew one to see if it makes a difference, but the lights etc still come on and in no time the beatt is flat, luckly for me i have batt charger and a portable bumb start otherwise i would of been stranded no-end of times,

i been told alternatot by quite few people but i doubted as i didnt think alternator would stop the fan rad fan kicking in, but it does seem to sound light the alternator, luckly i can get one for £65 new, just gota pay someone to fit it :S

From what i have read above i would suggest that it is your alternator belt that is slipping

therfore not charging Battery

also not efectivley pumping water to cool engine due to same problem of belt slippage

As you drive you would be running on Battery power only and when its dark you wouldnt get far i should think with lights also draining power

If your or a friend are replacing the alternator - also do the belt at the same time and my possible reasons for the problem would have disapeared.

Hope you resolve this with the fix you are doing

the water pump is controlled by the timing belt is it not??

the alternator belt run by the crankshaft pulley ??

ive changed the Battery already, ive also toped the Battery up with the correct fluid and the bettery is fine an my other car, ive ordered a new belt as well as the alternantor, was surpose to fit them yesterday but the delivery never arrived so i got to go collect on monday, the belt is tight on everything so i dont think its that slipping,

surpose if the alternantor fails i change the water pump but the water temp never goes above the normal temp on the gauge on my dash,

but with the Battery going flat im still to assume the alternator as gone or on the way out?

if it is the cat light i assume i just need to change that part of the exhaust to fix?

no, when the altonator fails you get the two warning lights coming on, it happened to me and i didn't even have a cat or a cat temp sensor in the exhaust

hi,

ok i changed the alternator today, now i took the car for a spin around the block and felt performance wise alot better, but i think i have noticed which i cant say ive noticed before is, when the car is idle the Battery meter drops to 12v, whe ni drive it goes up to 14v, is that normal?

i started the car and disconnected the Battery and it still stayd on so i assume the alternator is working enuff to keep the car alive :D

it should be about those value's mate, i take it your warning lights are out and the problems sorted then?

ye the batt and cat light dont come on no more, but i havent took it for a long drive yet so not tested properly, just the batter voltage worriing now, hoping its just the fact i prob not driven the car enuff to charge the Battery fully

  • 4 weeks later...

Your readings are spot on mate.

When revving 14v 'cos car is running off the Alternator so spot on!!!!! :)

When idling 12v or thereabouts 'cos car is now running off the 12v Battery 'cos not revving high enough for Alternator to kick in!!! ;)

Sorry about the late post, I've been away for a while! :crutchy:
