Engine Noise..the Engineers Diagnosis

hi folks

just been to colchester toyota, had a engineer listen to 'noise',apparently its the water pump, apparently when they are removed for inspection the impellars spin just are they are supposed to,freely and quietly.

but when they are re installed, beacause they are under 'belt stress' they sometimes 'groan',nothing wrong with it,just a irritating 'groaning' noise us poor owners put up with,if you happen to own a affected vehicle.

whilst i was there i made him listen to the other sound,a 'squeak' when engine is being turned off, apparently its the 'brake vaccum' check valve slightly vibrating as it 'does its job'.

however both are being renewed in about 3 weeks time on my extended guarantee.

i did have a replacement water pump fitted about same time last year,....seems it may be a niggly rav4 'problem'.

i like my rav though, and its never let me down in 43'000 miles...good ol toyota reliability!

just wish it didnt have 'odd' noises

The water pump noise that you describe, does it sound as if it increases in frequency and then stop ?

I get that sort of noise, mainly when the engine is cold and wondered if it may be the same as I had my pump replaced under warranty last summer.

I've been an engineer for quite a long time and I never heard of belt stress (I had a little bit just after Christmas but that was something else).

The water pump is designed to run with a tensioned belt and any noise from the it indicates a fault. There is something wrong - not just an irritation that needs to be lived with. We do hear of pump problems but not anually.

Brake servo check valves should not make a noise either and get on with its job quietly.

This "engineer" is right to replace your faulty components but I question whether they are behaving normally.

no afraid not,its a wierd sound, its a real shame we cant post 5 to 10 second videos or sound clips on here,as it really has to be heard to believe it.

its was a year ago entielry random but now you can hear it almost constantly in cab, with engine running at stand still cold or hot engine ,i have contemplated complaining to toyota head office,as dealership staff 'just replace' parts that may be the cause....not in my opinion fault solving engineers.

sometimes feel a little fobbed off by them

i am (was) convinced it was something to do with clutch as occasionally when you let clutch 'bite' it sometimes affects the sound.

does anybody think i am right to contact head office about this please ?,as my extended guarantee expires in oct and may get some more 'clout' from them rather than at dealership level

Nothing to stop you posting the clips on Youtube or wherever then putting the link on here so people can have a look/listen to it.

I hate it when half trained people are called Engineers, thought the current term was Technician - trained to read a fault computer then just swop the offending parts or if not covered by the computer just to keep putting new bits on it until it's fixed as opposed to a Mechanic who finds out what's wrong first then just replaces/repairs the offending part.

ah....yes,never thought of that,i will make a recording of it during daylight hours tomorow with bonnett up.

you cant see anything apart from engine running as usual, but it has to be heard to believe it.

however.........

i did try recording just now in the dark outside , but.....recorded for a full 2 minutes, and not a murmer..engine quiet, just as it should be......typical

it was far worse when weather was cold last week......frustrating
