Grinding Noise Problem?

Im having some problems with my celica, ive had it for about 8 months now and it has started making a very bad grinding noise from the front wheel when i am on uneven ground and turning, often when im near full lock. It seems to be a lot worse when its cold which is strange but i really dont know what to do with it and think i am going to have to take it to a toyota garage to be looked at, when jacked up there is no visable problems when spinning the wheel on lock or suspension etc but then by jacking it up it could be masking the problem, does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be?

had a similar fault when i had my corolla, have you checked the brakes, see if the discs are badly corroded or pads worn?

could also be something fickle like a stone jammed in somewhere near brake pads

woulodnt take it to toyota unless under warranty they might charge you an hours labour to check it...... approx 80 quid plus vat

Yeh definitely dont go to toyota you will pay an arm and a leg try and find someone recommended by a friend, if you need to take it in of course.

Perhaps have a nose at the driveshaft universal joints, the outside one nearest the wheel at fault. They show up as being worn when the car is on full lock.

After replacing pads on the Celica I had it did the same thing, I had caught the splash guard putting the wheel on and it was rubbing when turning or on rough roads. I just reached round and pulled it away from the disc. ;)

I'm not saying this is your problem but it is something to look for

Is it a metallic grinding noise, or more of a plastic scrape?

It could be that the tyre is rubbing against some arch plastic

Also check your CV joint for splits/leaks

Did you take off the disc when you jacked it up? Its worth doing so, as there may be a stone stuck between it and the disc guard, but this is probably the least likely as you say it mainly happens on full lock.

yea i had a similar problem, i think it was the brakes were sticking and not releasing quickly, and the disc was slightly bent.

i took it to a local garage who does all my work now

i dont trust toyota after they attached the bottom engine covers with cable ties and the new headlamp bulbs didnt work
