Ts Shift Linkages/stiff Into 1st?!

hi guys, so i have a niggly little issue with my gear shifting, sometimes - usually when its cold first thing i can have problems shifting into 1st gear when stopped or rolling sub 10mph like there is an iron barr across the gear so it just wont go in.

usually i have to foot off the clutch, re-press and then re-try for 1st usually this is sucessful but sometimes it can take a 3rd try.

this can cause issues coming to redtraffic lights that i know are going to turn green any sec as i dont like to drop into 2nd as the rpm is very low. and otherwise i have to stop. shuffle for first and then get it and go!

dont really have any issues with other gears, sometimes reverse a bit:/ too but mostly fine.

i have good fully synth gearbox oil recently changed and a pre facelift Corolla TS.

would uprated shift linkage help? anyone having same issues?

my 54 plate t sport feels very stiff and reluctant to go into first when cold. once its warmed up its slightly better.

i have found mine to be the exact same can take 2-3 goes sometimes but ii generally think changing back down to first even when rolling is a struggle.

ahh hmm good to know its not just my box thats knackered,

its been mentioned that the stronger gear linkage from the facelift may help but obviously if you guys struggle also maybe not!

i wonder if the TRD Short shift may help or if its a different issue altogether.

The short shifter doesn't make any noticeable difference at all. The engagement of each gear is much more solid, but the actual change is no easier.

Yes. I can't stand it personally. There was a thread on the Aussie TOC site about someone doing a ghetto mod to make it nice and smooth. I'll see if I can find the link.

EDIT: here ya go >>Linky<< It appears to have grown a couple of pages since i last read it, so I may have to re-read it to see if anything else has come up that may be useful.

lol aye seem so:/

lol strangely enough i read that today at work heh

hm:/ it is a bit ghetto and no real promise that it will cure what we seem to suffer.

but at least you guys have given me some solics in that its not just my car with the problem!

It also causes a problem when i drove other cars, because when I goto change gear I get pretty close to ripping out the shifter as I'm so used to putting a lot of effort into changing gears and most other cars are silky smooth and incredibly light in comparison.

Never had any problems getting 1st when cold, but sometimes its easy to miss 1st to 2nd on full flight  I changed the gearbox oil in mine with Comma gear oil 75w-90 SS (as far as i remember), think it was around £10 for 2.5l and its made a definate difference (car has 56k). For the sake of a tenners worth of oil, its well worth it. Was driving my dads new model Volvo S40 last week though and the gearchange is much nicer than the TS...but its newer and only has 20k.

I've had mine changed twice in the last 6 months both times with 75W-90 Silkolene oil. Stick disgusting gear action on the car.

you can't put most cars in to first gear when doin a certain speed

an also i've always been advised it's not good to put car in 1st when still travelling

you just need to use more clutch rolling off in 2nd from low speeds

The problem on downshift doesn't apply to me as I only downshift to 1st when I stop at junctions or traffic lights. The TS is more than capable of pulling away in 2nd if you are still rolling so I don't do what ballist1x does as I can't see it doing the engine and gearbox any good at all.

is the silkolene fully synthetic?

I suggest the following:

Yes the silkolene is fully synthetic

wow what do i do thats doing the damage?

the engine always sounds like it is bogging if i go straight to 2nd on a rolling start at same 5-10mph!

i never go back in to 1st unless i'm stopped

don't mean to sound sarcastic an to give you drivin lesson but if your rolling off in 2nd from low speeds like you say, don;t bring clutch completely up until your engine is not struggling

I have found 3rd gear to grind a bit when the weather is cold even with my clutch right hard to the floor but its fine when its all warm.

was worrying me a bit but it seems to of stopped doing it at the moment.

no synchro on 1st. i had difficulty engaging 1st and reverse - when staionary! - and had the linkages changed. the linkages from a facelift were improved from the originals. car shouldnt be bogging from 5mph in 2nd. stop trying to force it into 1st when moving - you may see tiff needell doing it on telly but they aint his cars!

well i just had a new clutch i didnt want to be riding the clutch in 2nd and oval shaping my main bearings by setting off in 2nd gear, otherwise, why would they have a gear lower than our current 2nd?

but if im above 5mph ill have a try

800rmp in second is like 2-3mph which is fine. 1st is for setting off only - if the cars already moving no need for 1st............. unless you want to win at the lights which is what it sounds like. you'll only damage internals if your labouring.
