Fuel Issues 4.2 2001 D4d

HI all, My Rav had been giving me trouble for a little while. when starting from cold it would be sluggish for the first 10 miles or so, before it fully warmed up when I would suddenly feel a surge of power.

It became harder start, and would never start first time when cold, but always when warm.

Finally on NYE it stopped starting. The engine sounds like it's trying to start, but no fuel is getting to it.

The AA didn't have a clue, and sent me to the Local Toyota garage who also claimed to be puzzled. They claimed that the fault is with the fuel pump and that i'd have to pay £550 to get it tested. If it was at fault it would cost £795 to replace.

I've taken it to another garage but they don't seem to have much Idea either, as side from replacing the fuel pump.

Just wondered if anyone had any Ideas, or knew of a good Garage in or near Warrington, where I wouldn't get ripped off.

I used to live in West Yorkshire where there were a lot of places that knew how to deal with Toyotas, but struggling over here!

Theres a clutch of dieselly RAV fantasists in and around warrington who should be able to keep you right - Fujisan when he wakes up; Local Hero when he comes off shift; and a host of others.

I'd have thought a simple pressure test on the rail would confirm the efficiency of a pump, but then I'm just a mere petrol RAV owner. My landrover was easy to tell if the diesel reached the engine as it spewed out everywhere!!

Anchorman posted just recently about the glow plugs fault on his dieselly which led to starting problems.

Sorry to hear about your problems.

To be honest, with my car still less then three years old I still going to Toyota for servicing, Bentleys in Warrington and they seem to do a good job. But lucky, I've never had to asked them to repair anything, so I don't know about them on that score.

We are toying with taking the wifes car for it's next service, etc., to Warrington Service Centre, in Church Street. Never used them before, but they look alright

Sorry can't be more help then that.

You might want to check out this PDF to find the possible faults: Problem_symptom_table.pdf

Also, see this PDF about the fuel rail pressure: Fuel_Rail_Pressure.pdf

A quick way to find the fuel rail pressure could be to measure pin 14 on a plug behind the stereo. The voltage between this pin and earth should be proportional to the actual pressure, which you can see in the above PDF.

This is the plug where the stereo gets the fuel information:

Good Luck

KG271...I've had similar problems on my RAV..about 2 years ago it lost all power, hated going up hills...any how. It turned out to be the the High Pressure Fuel Pump... had it re-serviced and all fine for about another year.. then like you if hated starting and one cold night miles from home it failed.. cranked over but not starting..

Finally got home and got it recovered back to garage that originally fixed it..after a long analysis period they found air was getting into the fuel pipes from some where, not able to find exact location. So they replaced all the fuel pipes from tank forwarward....Been good ever since....

May want to get a garage to do a pressure test on the pump and if that's comes up OK then look at the fuel pump and lines...Been posted on here how to bleed the pump by pushing the plunger on top...maybe yours is being starved of fuel....

When I have more time I'll dig out the old forum topics......

Some places re-condition the pumps (I take it you mean the High Pressure Pump)

May be worth while googling some places....

Have you tried some of the Jap car breakers? Or breakers that are on the internet?

Seems a lot of money for a fluid shifter.
