I want to upgrade my head unit but keep the CD changer, is this possible?

It's so I can fit an amp, unless anyone has any other ideas how to do so?

Thanks!

Hi

seems to be 2 posts here in duplicate ??

anyway, welcome to this forum.

From what you say, it sounds to me that you have a later head unit fitted. In simple terms, I'd guess that whatever head unit you buy should be able to communicate with the cd changer but best to ask the folk that you are buying the unit from?

As far as an amp, then this is a straightforward job as well - taking the output from the head unit and following the instructions from the amp manufacturer.

Yeah that was my fault I pressed the button twice, lol.

I guess I didn't word it very well, more wondering whether its possible to change the existing head unit to a decent new one, and keep the standard factory fit cd changer (and control, which is under the head unit), as I need a pre-out on the head unit to fit an amp, it won't work with the standard factory fit head unit as it has no pre out.

I didn't realise the 96 RAV had a CD player- The 1994 unit was a basic radio and cassette player. I removed this to fit a modern unit that had a cd slot as well. Gave me SD card and USB connection too.

Yeah it has a cd changer in the top compartment by the rear driver side light.

I've got a 1400w rms system in my current vehicle and realising I'm due for a downgrade, it seemed right to utilise the cd changer already there and get a head unit and adapter to connect to it, thought it may be possible, wondered if anyone had any experience of it.

Also, due to the boot space and the reclining rear seats (a nice touch), I thought I'd see if anyone had managed to tuck amps away anywhere, or fit subs anywhere in custom boxes.

You will not find a factory Toyota radio with pre-amp outs.

The back of Toyota stereos look like this.

If you have a 12-pin connector for the CD-changer, you can get a newer Toyota Stereo to connect to it and control the CD-changer.

You can use a product like this to convert the speaker leads to RCAs. I don't know how clean the sound would be, but it's an option.

Personally though, I would just buy a new aftermarket stereo and either

a) compress the music into mp3/wma files, burn it on a CD-R and play it that way (just about all aftermarket stereos play these files).

B) buy an Apple iPod or a similar device and plug it in.

I have a cd-changer in my Nissan, but ever since I bought an iPod, it hasn't gotten any use.

Good quality aftermarket stereos are very affordable and have the pre-amp outs.
