Engine management light came on a couple of days ago. Have had it checked, and points to glow plugs and associated equipment. Car has done just under 44000 miles. Is it advisable to change the plugs?

Mine went at about 60k. The management light came on three times in the space of a two weeks. Had them checked and three of the four had gone. If ones away - replace all four. Not cheap tho - cost me £180.

Depending on model, they shouldonly be about £80 a set, plus fitting. Have the resistance checked on each plug and change them all if there are any inconsistancies

Thanks fellas,

Order for plugs and a couple of other bits on it's way to Wrexham shortly.

I suspect because the car only does approx 9K miles a year, mainly involving many short journeys, may have something to do with demise of glow plugs.

A glow plug is a bit like a heated steel rod, fitted in diesel engines where you would normally find a spark plug on a petrol model. It is heated when you turn the ignition on, to pre heat the cold diesel in the combustion chamber. It makes for easier starting, as diesel engines dont like starting from cold. They normally last a long time, but a bit like an electric fire, the element will go at some stage, due to the on/off process every time you start from cold
