What Kind Of Mods Invalidate Your Car Insurance?

Iv been preparing a few mods to my Auris and suddenly I began to think of the insurance. What kind of mods do you think affect the cost of your insurance? Tints? Exhausts? Tail pipes? Air filters? alloys?

Do company's always have to know abotu these minor mods? Iv had tints, and strictly speaking my insurance company should know about this; but what difference does it make if iv got tints? Why should anyone pay higher insurance for tints? or alloys in that case?

Also, what are the best terms to use when calling an insurance company to tell them you have added 18" alloys? or a back box/ tail pipe?? Something that gives the impression that the mods are made for safety ect, and not for the everyday boy racer look ect?

In reality anything that alters the makers standard specification should be notified to your insurers, even exhausts and alloys.

Your policy and renewal will ask just that question, and its up to you how you answer?

The insurers are always looking for ways to get out of paying claims, and to not notify them of modifications just gives them the excuse they require, and in the event of a bad accident or fatality, you could find yourself being sued by the family of the injured or deceased.

Try companies such as Adrian Flux who cater for modified cars, and coming from a highly modified VAG car, I always notified the insurers.

Ask yourself how you would feel if you or one of your family were hit by what had then become an uninsured driver due to the undisclosed mods to the car.

As said above you should call a few modified car insurance companies who will know about the mods etc.

Im very sure you wont ever get an insurance company to believe you have fitted an exhaust/backbox or larger alloy wheels for 'safety' though lol No matter how you word it.

Mart :)

And perhaps it would be a good idea to phone the company partnered with the Toyota Owners Club and offer discounts to club members!
