Took A Test Ride.....

Managed to take out the new rav for an hour yesterday on my own, felt more comfortable without sales guy next to me.

Was impressed with the power for a 4x4,but as im a petrol car owner i take it 1st gear does not need the pedal pushed almost to the floor and found it was better to get into 2nd soon as,it picked up a lot quicker.

Couple of minor things, was the fuel range showed 7miles,was on the red,so just put a fiver in for the hour, but still even after putting this in the range did not increase but slowly counted down again from 7,to 0 miles even tho i did more than 7 miles over the journey....how does this work??

Also i assume on the xtr, that you can set the climate for passenger on,driver off,but could not sort this either, and was starting to burn up....so just had to switch it off altogether.

Was impressed with the rav over my old freelander petrol that had no guts in 2001..also handles much like a car on cornering at speed, and picked up to speed limit :P very quickly.

Certainly considering one! ;)

I have a diesel XTR, 07 model series 3. It is a brilliant car. As you say first gear is just to move off, acceleration out of 2nd is first class once the vehicle is moving. I normally miss out gears going up the box, i.e. 2nd to 4th. and 4th to 6th.

6 th gear is 33 m.p.h. per 1000 revs; and 4th. gear the best for a fast over take. Don't worry about the reserve tank issue, you have a good eighty miles when the light comes on, and the car returns an easy 50 m.p.g. To activate individual heating control on the passenger side you need to press the centre button on that side, it then lights up, and you have independent control.

Get out there and buy it, beats the Porsche Cayenne any day !!!

Except from the lights + top speed, I would have thought, Although the rav is more economical + depreciates slower

I don't know the technical answer to the fuel range countdown but if you put a sall amout in it takes its bat home but if you put a decent amout in, say half a tank, it feels better and re-sets and give you the correct range.

I have a T180 and I was very tempted by the XTR and in all honesty I think they are both excellent models. Go get one is my advice!

I've had 2 Nedflanders in the past, the Rav is way superior  The range thingy won't work if the gauge

is down in the red. Buy the Rav you will not regret it.

Do consider the additional small premium for hinge insurance tho!

??

Thanks for your views, and help. The gauge was now out the red after top up,but still gave the 7 mile range.Sales guy seems to think the igintion needs to be off for about 5 mins for it to recalculate...but could just be salesman bull!

Will let you know if i do have one,and any more info and ownership advice also taken in.cheers all

Sorry folks, hit the wrong button - this is what I meant to say.

My 58 XTR d4d with 3.5 k on the clock is showing 37.5 mpg on mixed driving with a pretty light foot. I know the on board computer is not that accurate but most people seem to think that it is optimistic if anything. Don't think I could possibly get near 50 mpg. What is everyone else getting? Apart from that delighted with the car.

Billdun, I would say you have some sort of problem there; it definitely has a diesel engine has it ??? Have you tried a manual check of your consumption, i.e. fill up, check mileage, on next fill up, check mileage again, subtract first figure and divide the difference by the number of litres taken to fill it up, and then divide by 4.546. This method also needs to be carefully deployed, and that the same technique must always be used to fill up; trickling in the last few litres so that the fuel appears in the nozzle.

In the Summer my 07 4-3 easily records 53-54 m.p.g., but the cold weather does bring this down by 4 or 5 m.p.g., and amazingly when I carry my non standard spare wheel in the boot, this also increases the consumption by a couple of points !!!

Hinge Insurance -

With so many doors you need to think of the additional maintenance and the risk that you will put on the cars body frame from so many doors being slammed. ( )

Must admit I would never insult my Rav by putting in anything less than Shell Optimax high Octane and filling the tank up to the full. Nor would I consider drinking cheap American whisky when I can buy high quality Cask strength from Scotland. In the same vein, I wouldn't buy size 9 shoes just cos they are cheaper - I am more comfortable with size 11.

Moral of the post?

You get out what you put in, and how you treat it.

I would say it's a little early to worry about your fuel economy, as you've only done 3.5k :)

Mine has taken a hit since the cold spell, as I'm only getting around 35mpg out of my T180. Try to keep your revs below 2000rpm and see how you get on when it gets a bit warmer

I'm very impressed with our 2.2 XTR economy. I did some tests recently.

This weekend i went from our house through town, on the m-way for a while then 30mins into a city and back again and it got 49.7mpg.

VERY impressive. I've had 50+ on flat m-way too. It won't go lower than 38mpg with the mrs short trips in, out and around town.

Hi Bildun, I agree with Duncs, I think your 37ish mpg is very realistic, 2 reasons Mr T is carrying out an ecu upgrade at the moment it is not a re-call + those who have had it done including Anchorman have experienced an increase in the recorded fuel consumption, whether it is using more fuel or the upgrade is making the OBC more accurate is not clear, but your car being so new will have had it done, secondly John 1944 either has a very special rav or is a very frugal driver he regularly achieves 50 mpg, we did a blobwatch comp which basically was to see how far anyone could get between full + empty the overall winner was Chatman who achieved 48 mpg on a tank, none of us could get near + most were low 40s, so on a new engine which is still tight + driving like a normal human being i would not be dissapointed, and it will improve on longer runs..I can put up a picture of mine showing an average of 98.5 mpg this was achieved by zeroing all my trips and coasting with the engine on the last 3 miles downhill into Pitlochry but its hardly realistic...in fact its a load of B******s

I have also been looking at accessories like running boards, and maybe roof rails, all for looks really rather than purpose, regarding the roof rails anyway!!

Can anyone tell me how much they cost retail at toyota,i know parts king on here can supply but just want a ball park figure on the cost of what these will set me back, also any pics with running boards or side bars, roof rails would be good to see,so post away. Thanks again ;)

My T180 - Yesterday High Peak in Derbyshire to Ilkley in North Yorkshire- best mpg according to OBC - 40 dropped to 38 on M65 as every one else stopped in snow - 3 miles took 3/4 hr in first gear!

Only get 35/36 round home on short runs however.

Just added up my overall fuel consumption since I got the XT5 D4-D in April. We've done 8423 miles at an overall consumption of 41.8mpg with a best "tankful" of 51.5mpg. All measurements are on full tank-to-full tank basis. Considering the area that I live in, I'm reasonably pleased with that. The error between the OBC and the full-to-full calculation varies between 5.3% and 18.5% and it's always a positive error i.e. the OBC reads high, interestingly the error is getting worse as the car gets older. Haven't had the ECU upgrade done yet, probably wait till it's first service which is likely to be some time in March. Be interesting to see if there is a step change in the error.

just to put my two pennyworth in. I have an 06 plate XT4 with 18500 on the clock which has had the ECU upgrade. I use BP Diesel (not the ultimate but the ordinary cooking grade) I show a regular reading of 50 + to the gallon on a run over about 20miles or more using a mixture of roads and a reasonably light right foot and not letting the engine labour in 6th and with the aircon off. I rarely go over 2500rpm. I did not notice any change after the ECU upgrade.
