Rav 4.1

Hi Guys

Been a while since I was last on as the Rav has been running well.

Wife got front ended a few weeks before Christmas and we have had it back about 1 week from getting repaired

Today it has started hunting and loosing revs when put in gear. It is a 1994 Automatic.

When in neutral or park it sits around the 800 to 1000rpm, whn in gear (drive or reverse) she goes all juddery and the revs drop down to about 600rpm and starts hunting.

I thought it might be the auto-choke but not sure.

Anyone point em in the right direction.

Thanks

Matt

If its coincident with the bump then its back to the garage.

Reasons - maybe the air intake side of things. The MAF thing is quite sensitive. Or the idle control valve.

What about the exhaust - was it damaged -? Then perhaps the sensors on that. After a trauma, various things can go wrong..

I suffered trauma 10 years ago and haven't been right since - thankfully not been put to the breakers quite yet !

It should go to "idle up" when you put it in drive so maybe a switch on the gearbox or ECU. I haven't had a lot to do with 4.1s but there are a couple of Toyota mechanics on here - shutty and moonstone mart who might be able to tell you where to look. Other than that a decent auto transmission specialist should know.

Does the 4.1 had an ODB-II port? My Haynes manual says all models have one, but mine only has a diagnostic port in the engien bay.

No - the OBD was introduced in the 4.2 reign I think. There are flash codes available on the 4.1 ..... think I posted these up about a year ago or so????

Thanks

So much for the Haynes!

The garage that done the insurance work is coming back out tomorrow to look it over. The thing even sounds like its mis-firing now.

Thanks again

It's easy to get the flash codes. You just need to connect 2 terminals in the diagnostic plug and it will flash the codes to you.

Garage sats the dizzy cap has a hairline crack in it, and its not caused by the accident! Does not sound right to me.

Now as far as I am concerned it ran perfect when they collected it, so I expect it back the same way.

Anyone know if I am entitled to this or am I just hopeful!

They do get hairline cracks from time to time. This is now resolved as dizzy caps are no more!

Ask to see the old cap - that you are most definitely entitled to. You should be able to see if it has any physical damage and then you can take it from there.

Good luck

I don't think the cap is all that much - about £30 ?? Not sure. If it was running ok before then its logical to assume the thing cracked from the trauma of the bump. Course, theres the argument of wear and tear and becoming more brittle over time.

The same insurance excuse gets used whenever you claim - for anything. I'd awful fights with loss adjusters over 2 different claims - eventually telling the last one to run before I thumped him !! I'd the same problem when arnold clark repaired a car after substantial damage when it was stolen. They wouldn't accept damage to various parts either and the RAC insurance was no help whatsoever so I've never used the RAC ever again. Haven't used AC either. Abd I've told a good few people why!!! One day companies will waken up....especially with the internet comms being so much better than ever.

Companies spend a lot of money building credibility and reputation and they need to begin to realise that it can all be lost by not ensuring the customer is happy. Skimping over minor parts replacement is just crazy.
