2001 Avensis D4d Flywheel

I have a 2001 Avensis D4D GS which has developed a knocking noise from the area of the gearbox when the car is ticking over. A mechanic ( not Toyota trained) has listened to it and feels it might be the flywheel, but can't tell until that part of the engine is dismantled. If he's right the bill would be around £900.

I seem to recall that a long time ago I read on this forum that someone else had a flywheel problem with an Avensis and it turned out to be a design fault, which Toyota Uk hadn't publicised. Can anyone shed any light on this matter.

I am about to ask the local Toyota main dealer for a second opinion.

Sounds like a flywheel problem

You need to buy the "flywheel kit" from toyota.

Yes its a manufacturing fault with the part

Toyota wont do any thing about it

Your best bet is to go down to the local T Garage speak to the service manager and see if he can discount parts and labour.

If you search the forums, lots of people have had flywheel issues.

PM me for prices when you are ready

Kingo

do I get taxi discount!

Thanks for the advice. The irony is I have been hanging on to the car longer than I should just to see what the new 2009 Avensis is like. My local Toyota maindealer can't fit me in until the 28th so I'm trying other T dealers in South Wales. The Blue moon offers on the outgoing model look tempting though. Cheers.

I took your advice and took it to the service department at Cardiff Toyota. They were sympathetic and gave me discount on parts and labour. I've booked it in for next week and although I can still drive it, I will use it sparingly.

While I was there I asked the sales dept. to value it against a new car (2008 model) they offered me a £1000 which I turned down flat. So it looks like I'll have the fault corrected and keep it a while longer. It's just as well I like the car. Thanks for the advice.

what have they quoted you ?

I had the job done today by Cardiff Toyota. The original quote of £620 plus vat (which included discount) was due to a misunderstanding!!!!!!! They thought they were quoting for the clutch replacement ONLY!!! Even though I had specifically said the flywheel seemed to be the problem.

When they found the flywheel really did need replacing the bill went to over £1000 (again including discount). Because I felt I had been misled and said so, I negotiated the price down to a more acceptable level.

Moral of the story.... Get any quote in writing.

The car now drives very well and I hope it will last a while longer without major expense.
