Always Check Your Doors & Boot Are Shut Or Your Batter Will Run Do

Recently I moved into a flat within walking distance of work, & so have only been using my Yaris 1-2 times a week.

Yesterday I was just about to set off to my parent's house when my Yaris wouldn't start. Barely turning over with only the sound of the started motor.

I has last used it on the Wednesday & it was fine. In 2 years it's almost always started first time.

I noticed that the remote lock would open but not close the doors to I puzzled if the chip had gone wrong. When I tried the spare I got the same response.

One thing that twigged was that the boot wasn't fully closed, after I last used it I was carrying a load from out the boot & must have not closed it down enough to switch of the interior light.

The car park at my flat is very well lit & I never noticed that it was on, & must have not spotted the door on light on the dash.

So remember don't do the same mistake as me.

Luckily my dad managed to borrow a charger off a friend so I'm topping the Battery up. Getting it out was tricky, with 2 stiff nuts to undo & no handle on the Battery.

I'll let everyone how I get on.

There should be no need to pump the accelerator when starting a Yaris from cold............that could result in flooding it.

If it will not start with your foot off the accelerator then there is something wrong.

All should be OK if the Battery is well charged

No mate, he's saying that his starting and key problems were due to his Battery being flat.

After charging the Battery for nearly a day it was reading high on the charger's scale, so I decided to put it back in, luckily I had someone to help me.

It wasn't so hard to get the Battery back in, (though why the hold had to be so fiddly to use is another matter!) & it started first time, if a little rough running at first.

As mentioned elsewhere the engine management seemed to take a bit to settle down, but after a drive for a few junctions on the M60 & back it seemed fine.

pumping the acceletator makes no difference at all on modern cars - they are all fuel injection with electric fuel pumps.

so neither will you flood it nor will you do any good.

pumping the accelerator was only appropriate to cars filled with carburettors where they had a reservoir of fuel inside them and pumping the acceleratopr squirted neat fuel straight into the engine.

You won't find a carburettor on any car built after (approx) 1995.

My mum's 1995(!) Ford Fiesta used to flood when it stalled with a cold engine, at least it needed the acceletator pushing all the way down to get it going again.

As for my Yaris it's still running OK, I was worried that my attempts to start it with a near flat Battery could have damaged something, but it's running as before.
