Heated Rear Window

Hi,

Over the course of the winter I have had to make more use of the heated rear window and have found that not all the lines are working. As only the top three appear to function I do not get a good view from the back. Is this something that is repairable or does the whole window need replacing? If it does I assume that this is not covered by my insurance. Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so how did you resolve it?

Thanks,

Paul.

You need to inspect the lines very carefully to look for breaks - usually caused by poor loading of the boot resulting in the conductive strip being scratched and thus breaking the circuit. Halfrauds used to sell a conductive paint precisely for repairing heated windows - probably still do.

I bought some to repair one strip on a 5 series touring rear window. It was incredibly expensive [about 9 quid for a few ccs.] but was a lot cheaper than a new window!

If you mask along the affected strip a neat finish can be achieved. Just follow the instructions on pack.

I've used that stuff successfully in the past. It's worth a try.

I've used conductive paint in the past and it sems to work very well but is expensive. However, much cheaper than a window as stated. Also a lot simpler. Make sure the screen is cleaned well beforhand. The paint only needs to touch the ends of the break don't make the mistake of painting over the length of the printed circuit as it is a waste of paint.

Did you know that the orginal idea for the heated rear screen was the precurser to the printed circuit board we all take for granted now? Jus a bit of useful trivia.
