Our 1998 Rav 4 will start when its cold, but when its been running for a period it wont start again. As soon as its cool it will start again. When it wont start all electrics still work. When you try to start it, it wont even turnover nothing happens.

Welcome to the forum!!

What a time to have problems - just when you need the 4x4 to cope with the weather!!!

A couple of simple questions - when you say all electrics work when it won't start, I assume you mean lights etc etc, ie everything but the starter motor?

Does the ignition light come on when you try to start it ?

Meantime I'll start trying to think !

Only thing that comes to mind is maybe a faulty earth strap/ connection on Battery.......

It should turn the starter no matter........ so I kinda think its points to an electrical fault?????

Hmmmm

if you put the headlights on, then try to start when its warm, do the headlights dim even if the starter doesn't turn?? Maybe a faulty starter motor or solenoid??

It isn't uncommon for electrical components to go "open circuit" when they get hot.

You need to do a quick test when it won't start. The starter has 2 leads going to it. One is the big HT lead from the Battery and the other is the smaller feed to the solenoid from the start position on the key switch. When it won't start, just get somebody to turn the key to the start position and then see if you can pick up 12V at the start wire.

If you can then you just need to check all the leads as bothy has suggested. Clean both Battery terminals (even if they look clean) and then look at the earth leads between the Battery and the engine/body.

If they are all OK your starter is duff.
