Alternator Belt Replacement

'98 GS TD

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, have been reading through some of the posts on here about replacing the alternator belt... some 19mm inaccessible bolt and suchlike but what I need to know is... do I need to remove the longer (power steering?, air con? etc) belt to replace the shorter altntr belt on a '98 GS TD...

And also is it easier to get access from offside wheel arch or from underneath...

Thanks for any relevant thoughts...

OK, so here I am talking to meself!

Just spent a few hours working on this..

Seems like longer toothed belt needs to come off before removing alternator belt.

Longer belt should be a doddle to remove - undo tensioner bolt, slip belt off crankshaft pulley & then slip old alternator belt off the other crankshaft pulley & replace with new belt.

OK, here's what happened - tensioner bolt on alternator belt was seized & snapped! - took a while to bodge up a replacement...

Tensioner bolt on longer toothed belt was easy enough to turn but had no effect on the tension of the belt - tensioner pulley wheel has a 14mm bolt - does this needed to be loosened? I couldn't shift it - maybe has a left-hand thread or summat..

So ended up having to hope that the old belt holds together for a while yet...
