Need Help With Manifold Cover Bolt On Carina E M Reg

Hi All,

Recently I had a core plug pop out of the engine block on my M reg Carina E 1587cc auto. It is directly beneath the manifold so at the very least i need to remove the manifold cover. I have managed to get the 2 nuts off the top and the 2 bolts at the bottom, but the one in the middle has rusted and softened. I cannot seem to get either a 9 or 10mm socket onto it despite loads of WD 40. The 10mm is too big and the 9mm too small (and the shape has been lost on the top of it).

Has anyone else had this issue and more importantly does anyone know a solution!!??

As a note, I am not a qualified mechanic but rather a semi-enthusiastic amateur (I walked away this morning to avoid losing my temper!!).

These do have a habit of rusting.

You really have two choices:

(i) buy a set of these:

or

(ii) drill into the bolt and use these:

With this the heat of the drill will loosen the grip the rust has over the threads.

Thanks for the reply, I eventually managed to 'Dremmel' the crap off of the nut and got it off that way. The manifold also had to come off as the core plug was underneath that and there was not enough room to get a good 'swing' at it.
