Australia has full automatic 1.6 VVTi's if I'm not mistaken.

I suppose you're right, maybe that's what I've heard too, but just remembered it all wrong

It's usual for me :D

Best regards, Alex

I've heard that in some countries there are "old" Auris' with full auto transmission and 1.8 engines... Will it be possible to choose full auto gearbox to the ones which will be sold in Europe with 1.8 engines?

As the powertrain (engine + gearbox) will be the same as the new Avensis, I suppose a 1,8 Valvematic Multidrive S 7-speed automatic would be possible. I have no confirmation though.

Hopes this answer your question :-)

Hi Tekker.

Thanks for the reply. :) You've confirmed my impression that the 1.8 petrol engine has been introduced in the Auris for the first time. I've read a few road test reports where the 2ZR-FAE is described a very nice engine in the Avensis, I'd imagine that it would be even better in the Auris.

Now if only we could have this combination in the UK. I suspect we won't get it though.

Cheers - Andy

Australia has the one motor for the entire range of Corolla hatch(AURIS) and Corolla sedan. We have the 1.8 2ZR-FE petrol motors available in AUTO and 6speed manual only...

Cheers

John

What kind of update in the 1.4 D4D? More power? optimized consumption or Co2 emissions? 6 gear box too?

If it was all of them would be nice something like a 110 and a consumption of 5l/100 or less with 6 gear box would be great.

The 1.4 D4D gets a 6 speed gear box, as well as 15 NM more (up to 205). Horsepower will still be 90.

Fuel consumption will be slightly better - I don't have the figures.

A DPF will be standard or option (depending on your country).

You've confirmed my impression that the 1.8 petrol engine has been introduced in the Auris for the first time.

The March 09 price list on the Toyota website lists the new 2009 Auris models: 1.33 and 1.6 Petrol and 1.4, 2.0 and 2.2 diesel - so no 1.8 petrol for UK. The Toyota website also makes it clear that there are no new engines to be introduced (the 1.33 was introduced last year).

My dealer has had two 2009 models delivered, the only obvious change is a new handbook dated 2009. The interior and exterior look the same except one of the door panels in the back had a slightly different stitching patterns - I wouldn't have noticed.

If people expect more they may be disappointed on April 6th. Yes there is evolution of the engines to get lower CO2 and fit within lower bands (and there are more of these) but cars don't get a true makeover after just two years of production? It's not surprising Toyota are not doing more because their rationale seems to be to limit the range of cars to reduce inventory (better for the accountants) and make the buying process simpler. With fewer cars sold it's inevitable that prices have been increased - but they are a business?

Kind regards

Hi.

My comment really referred to this being the first time the 1.8 had been available in the Auris in Europe, not the UK. I think that Toyota could do with offering a reasonably powerful petrol engine in the Auris and the 1.8 2ZR-FAE would have been a good step in that direction for the UK. It seems that only mainland Europe are going to get the more powerful engine. I'm in the market for a new car (I don't want diesel) and if the 1.8 had been available in the Auris here I would have given it a try. It's getting increasingly difficult to find a "small family" car with a reasonably powerful petrol engine from anyone other than the VAG stable these days.

As an aside, what is the significance of April 6th?

Cheers - Andy

1.8 engine in Honda Civic?

Thanks but no thanks. Managed to get one for a 4 hour test drive last year. Didn't like it at all.

Current favorite is 1.4 TSI Golf SE but still looking at other options, I've had over 20 years of Golfs and really fancy a change!

Ah! I see. :)

There is a new 1.6 engine for 2009 - 1.6 valvematic engine. More powerful and economic, with 6 speed gear box. I have for the last 10 days been the proud owner of an Auris TR with the new engine. So far I am very pleased with it.

Hi Nigel, glad to hear you're pleased with your new car. :) I hadn't realised that the new engine was now "out in the wild". Probably more important than the small increase in power and torque is the fact that maximum torque is now developed at a lower engine speed than before; 4400 rpm for the new Valvematic engine as opposed to 5200 for the older engine. This should make quite a difference to the 'drive-ability'. Obviously, the economy improvements are a benefit too. It would be interesting to hear from someone who gets the chance to drive both 1.6 petrol engines back to back and hear how the performance differs.

Cheers - Andy

How many revs does the new 1.6 valvematic with 6 speed do at 130 kph in top gear?

The old 1.6 does ~4.000 rpms.

Fabulous new engine by all accounts - are there any other improvements for the 2009 model year? Stop/Start only on 1.33?

Kind regards

I can confirm that the stop start is only on 1.33. As far as I can tell there are no other changes except there is no chrome trim on the boot of the new TR. The engine is very quiet and seems quicker than my last car which was Avensis 1.8. It is certainly more economical.

And for other new owners e.g. SR 180 there is the additional cost of the 'Toyota Motor Sport rear roof spoiler' at £ 276 - the best bit B) IMHO.

1. they won't all have it (shame)

2. it costs more (for less)

3. if the dealer fits it then it may go wrong (fitting and/or paint job)

4. why change what was so cool (unless its not PC to have a spoiler in the new 'green' age)

Kind regards

That is the case in the US

Also, in Egypt (as from the 2010 model) a 4 spd auto will be mated to the 1.6 Dual VVT-i (instead of the MM-T  )
