Noise From Rear Of 2004 Tourer When Driving Slowly Over Rough Roads.

Hi,

I have a 2004 1.8vvi Tourer. Lately I can hear a noise from the rear (I think) of the car when driving slowly over rough roads. The car does not make the noise when going over speed bumps etc, instead it is caused by rough tarmac.

I can best describe the noise as a regular rumble (rather than a knock or clunk). It sounds like it could be a loose exhaust, however, this has been checked and seems fine.

Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I had a similar issue a few months ago with 01. Different car, but may be related issue. There was a bushing gone on the right rear shock. the part was only a few euro, but involved about an hour's labour.

The rattle never happened on speed bumps, mainly on rough roads. It also did not happen if the car was full- made me pretty sure it was shock-related. Hope this was of some use.

I had the exact same problem (not potholes or speed bumps, but rough surfaces). Took it back to the dealer, who were first class! The mechanic came out with me, and heard the noise for himself, and he sussed it straight away - he said that sometimes there was some play in the brake callipers. Within a couple of hours he had cleaned all the brakes and packed the callipers with grease, and the noise has been gone ever since.
