2001 D4d Power Loss

Have a 2001 2.0l D4D avensis with 160k miles. Working fine in the lower gears and turbo kicks in okay. Driving on the motorway there is power loss at 3000RPM. Engine managment light came on but car worked fine below 3000revs. Was going to purchase a code reader on eBay (U480 OBD2 EOBD + Can Bus Fault Code Reader Scanner UK). Will this work on this car ? It says in the description that it cover's Diesel Cars in Europe made for sale 2004 onwards.

From reading other posts I suspect the SCV valves but want to verify this.

Any help appreciated.

hello

SCV - either works or not. In case engine is running this means SCV works.

Firstly check with fine fuel filter + air filter. It always ocured when you do not exppect it.

Cheers/Igor

hello

the fine fuel filter is located in the engine compartment (before HP fuel injection pump). as to the primer filter belong to booster pump in the tank -- i am not sure it is available. as to an air filter -- you know where to locate it.

Hello, I am from Spain and live in Vigo (Galicia), first of all, sorry because my bad English despite my grandfather was born in Liverpool...

I have an Avensis Verso with the same problem since.... 2002. The car works fine until reaching 3000 rpm and starts to give the power irregularly until 3.3300 rpm, higher rpm works fine. It doesn´t happens always and it depends on the way of driving. It´s more common when using 3th than if you are in 5th. More noticeable if accelating agressively than if doing it nicely. That´s the big problem because maybe it´s not an issue in highways but is very compromissing when you need all the power to pass a car ahead in a two way road. Im very scared if the car fails to give the accelaration whe you really need it.

Local dealer has try to resolve changing almost everything, turbo, catalizer, filters, some pipes that they suspect were bad working. Once in other city talking with the chief mechanic, told me that he had repair these problem drilling the catalyzer with a big size drill (that means that enviromental properties of the catalyzer where altered and doesn´t complain with the regulations).

I did not try that and the problem persist until now. These is the only issue with the car until now, I still thing that Toyota made the most trusted cars and therefore... I had recently buyed a Prius to my wife.

Regards

Starting has been always perfect, at the first try.

I have made all the services (each 15.000 km) and have made the latest last week (235.000km)

No vibration of the engine

Fist owner.

This is my 3trd Toyota, after a Carina and a Corolla and is the only one that had problems. The other one is probably known by other owners. Breaking disks are not enough solid to carry with the temperature reached when breaking agressively and lost it´s shape, after this point you have some vibration in the wheels when breaking. Therefore some work to reshape is needed perodically. The Official Toyota service makes it with no cost, concerned that it´s due to an error in the car design, I don´t know if they bill it to Toyota Spain.

well -- all your stataements confirm all must be in order.

i deem the only problem might be with error in ECU connected with ignition timing at high speeds/revs

it is better to test yr enfine at dealer's garage

All this is probably costing you more than it would than just getting your local centre to plug it into there Tester,it could be a anything causing this ;)

You have had the light on so chances are code will be stored on ECU,get it read and see what they say...good luck ;)

Got a Diagnostic test ran. Indicated fuel pump to be problem. Is it possible for the SCV valves to fail and lead to a lower pressure on the common rail or would an SCV valve fail lead to no pressure ?

hello

ok , look -- there are three main problem of th efuel injection pump, as follows:

- SCV;

- delivery valve;

- plungers and barrels wear down.

re SCV -- it either works or not;

re delivery valve/s - in case of leak the pressure in the rail will not be constant;

re plungers with barrels -- the effect is similar and the pair can not criate designed pressure in the rail.

To making,

Check website "www.talktomycar.co.uk" before purchasing code reader, will explain exact protocals that relate to your car. You could get caught out otherwise buying equipment that cannot read faults logged on your ECM.

To making,

You have DLC or data link connection in your engine bay, which is completey different to OBD2 connection. You will usually find 16 pin connector for OBD2 around the drivers footwell or behind ashtray.
