5th Gear

Hi All!!

I am new here, have just bought my first Rav4 (N Reg 3 Door) and very excited! I know that this has been posted before but am looking for an up to date answer if possible, so here goes,

I bought my Rav on Saturday, it has been fine all weekend, and was fine this morning going to work. i take 2 fast roads to work, one of which was congested this morning. However, on my way home 5th gear popped out twice. The first time I was about to change down into 4th, but the second time I was knowhere near it! It has made me a bit nervous - I don't want to be in 5th on a fast road and have it pop out and me loose control?!

My garage (where I bought it) are really good, but I am wondering really a) what is the problem likley to be? and B) is it easily fixable? and c) how many pennies am I looking at? Having just shelled out money for the car itself, I could do without having to spend a fortune as pay day is a month away yet!

The car has done 102,000 miles, is an N reg (96 I think) and I love it and don't want it to be broken

Please help!

Thanks

Becky!! :P

Surely you have a warranty on the vehicle. Even if not, and you bought the car 'as seen' you have legal rights as regards

this car. It sounds to me as though this could be expensive, very expensive. Take the car back to the garage tomorrow instead of going to work, and reject it !!!!

Yes this has came up before and is apparently caused by drivers holding/leaning on the gearstick while driving.

As I remember its not a huge job, some have fixed it themselves, I'm no expert, for your model you need some

advice from Bothwell Buyer. Good luck.

Ah

early morning.......

the 5th gear pop out is a simple and fairly cheap fix. I think theres a fix post on here somewhere, and theres info on it on RAV4world forum as well. Try a search on here first. It basically means accessing the gearbox in situ to replace 1 or 2 wee bits - as said its caused by drivers resting their paw on the gear lever when its in 5th and the result is it popping out of 5th.

So its not expensive - its not a big job - and it doesn't take long to do from memory.

Your gearbox is designed to handle 350bhp.... your engine pumps out 127bhp so the gearbox itself is rock hard!!!!! I'm shoving 300bhp through my original 1994 gearbox without complaint.

Admittedly and ashamed to say but I'm just clearing emails before I go to bed at this early point..... but I'll have a look tomorrow to pick up the posts.

Well, not expensive could mean several hundred pounds from memory so get the seller to fix it or get your money back.

The fix is detailed in RAV4World- see photos at

http://rav4world.com/forums/viewtopic.php?...hlight=5th+gear

However it should be warrantied by the selling garage.

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies. On the one hand this has all made me feel better, especially the 'it's just replacement of a couple of wee bits and bobs' reply, but on the other I am feeling worse :( especially the £334 (arghhh!) and the info about warranties etc. In hindsight I have perhaps been really really stupid, the garage we use is local to us and have always always treated us really really well, but there was no warranty with the car :( Although I did ring them today and they are taking it back in on Thursday. I have told them what I think the prob is (from the posts on here) and will see what they say to me. I love the car to bits so want to get this fixed and then look at sorting a cambelt if needs be so it will do for a good few years, but on the other hand, if it will cost a bomb to do then I will just ask for my pennies back and get something else. I still won't be out of pocket as I doubled my money on the old motor, but I really really want to keep the Rav!!!

PartsKing I will dig out the chassis number and ask you for some prices!

Cheers again and heres hoping!

Becky!

Hi Becky,

I'm no expert but even with no warranty I suspect that 'fitness for purpose' comes in in this situation. Trading standards might be of some help if the garage gets difficult. Then again, if they are local and have treated you well in the past, there is no reason to think that they will not do 'the honourable thing'. They don't want you spreading bad words about them in the current financial climate now do they?

I wish you luck.

Thanks!

Yeah, i don't really want to rock the boat with them, they have been really good to us. I have listed down the parts from Rav4world, and will take the list with me and explain what I think the problem is. That gives the mechanic a head start anyways! Hopefully then we can get it sorted, it is making me rather fed up I have to say! But, like I say, I love the car and want to have it running perfectly!!!!!

hey guys!!!

Took the Rav into the garage today, told them what I thought the prob was and left it with them. Went back tonight and they said I was absolutley right (hehe!!), parts are on order and Rav is going back in next week to be fixed, he said it will be pennies rather than pounds as they always look after me! Very happy now and acn't wait to have it all sorted!!!

Now am going to concentrate on the important bits, a snazy spare wheel cover, and a fab cd player!!!!

Thank you all for all your help and advice, will report back when fixed!!!

Cheers again!!

Becky!!!

Excellent news though I'm not sure you should be paying even pennies bearing in mind how short a time you have had the vehicle and that you identified the problem and the diamonds on here have diagnosed the cause and provided the solution. Still, at least you should now be able to enjoy your RAV properly.

Good on you girl!

Mind when you're driving not to rest your paw on the gearstick.

The parts listed on the tech doc have changed numbers yet again, your dealer will order the new part numbers for you, however they dont interchange with the older parts. In other words, you cant fit only half the componants, you have to change everything on the list and not skimp by leaving something off

Hi Becky and welcome! We have another lady member, Snowy3 who resides not very far from you. From memory she has the same version of the RAV as well. Bothwell Buyer will know better than me as he sorted some wheels for her.

Now, this window down, hair blowing in the wind bit - emmmm, have you seen the weather forecast for the beginning of next week? Still the RAV is great fun in snow, all you have to remember about them is they might go a lot better than ordinary cars in it - BUT they don't stop any better. Good luck and enjoy it!

In number 1 a few days ago, drove across our local bridge over the M74 - the bridge surface was black ice.....anyway got over fine and dropped the boss off at her work. Drove home and turned onto the road to the bridge ....with a car in front. The line of traffic waiting for the lights to change stretched onto the black-iced bridge and sadly a lady driver was unable to stop....clipped the kerb on braking, swung round to batter the rear off a lampost, bounced off the car in front, and shot (slowly) across the road to my side....whereupon the car in front (not a Toyota) went straight into the side of her!!!

Me?

I drove calmly around the carnage and debris without even an twitch of a slide and along the 300 yards to my house to phone the emergency services.

The RAV 3 door (well mine at least) is amazingly steady on many road surfaces!!! The Fawlken 225/40x18s did their job well!

Hi!! Yeah!! the forecast for this week is snow snow snow!!!!! yippeee I say!! whatever happened to the fantastically white winters of the 80's??? (when I was just a wee nipper in me blue snowsuit!!!)

Bit nervy about driving in snow, but managed ok a couple of months back when we had some snow and I had a tiny little aol renault clio!!! My Rav has 4 huge, and I mean HUGE tyres on it with really good tread on them! i think 3 of them are pratically brand new!!! So am not too nervous!!! That said, on Monday night I will have been working late and have to come back on very very dark roads which are very very fast, but I will just take my time!!!!!

I hope the people in the accident from the last post were all ok though.

Huge tyres are not always the best in the snow so take care. You need little narrow ones that cut through the snow and concentrate all the weight into a small area.

I meant to add that apart from a shake up, no broken bones - just lots of bent metal......

On my RAV, all the tyres are under 1000 miles old. I keep the slicks on a separate set of wheels!

I was told that Huge tyers fitted to a Jago Geep resulted in the failure of transmission, not sure why possibly differential could not cope! Anybody else got any experiance of huge tyers on RAV4.

The 4.1 RAV transmission is good for about 350bhp before it gets annoyed. Below that, you're more likely to displace the diff mount.
