mechanic is trying to charge me £60 for removing the alternator and putting on one which i bought - he said it took him 2 - 3 hours lmao

wot an ***** - i have a 2003 toyota corolla 2.0 d4-d n the alternator is seperate from the powersteering and waterpump etc i.e. has its own belt seperate from the crankshaft pulley and its easily acessible

how long do you reckon this should take, to remove and replace the alternator - i think sumwhere around 30 mins

hes only gonna get 20quid outta me if hes lucky

£60 sounds more than fair in all honesty.

is this mechanic a mate of yours? if so id be inclined not to rip him off, in light of the fact its always good to have mechanics on your side that are willing to do jobs for you from time to time.

To say two to three hours is indicative of the problem. Time scale should be in minutes.

To replace an alternator could not be more easy. Your 30 minutes would not be unreasonable and if the job done before could be much less. Mind you a lot of centres will not fit parts bought elsewhere so what you saved on the part cost you lost on the labour cost.

As said above you should have fitted it yourself.

youve got me all wrong - i would have fited it myself - my mechanic told me to go to this person so he could test it n "RECONDITION" it but he said the rectifier bridge was ****** so i had to get a new one! got a new one n thought to myself, rather than illegally towing my car 26miles to my house ill let him put it in for 20quid ... charges me 60 - then tells me he had to pull the driveshaft out of it to get at the alternator lol, bull*****! even if that were the case, driveshaft is a 10min job after the wheel is off!

he got £30 n im happy enuff

cars back :)
