K & N 33-2345

For those that might be interested the the K & N air filter part number for the RAV 4.3 2.2 D4D engine is 33-2345.

Just fitted this air filter to my car and every seems fine. :D

KN33-2345.jpg

But then again it's got to be better than the old air filter (after 20,000 miles) :lol:

Oldairfiltertop.jpg

Oldairfilterbottom.jpg

Yes, that is leaves and twig and seeds and the underside of the old filter. :blink: :shutit:

Only done a very short test run so far but the engine seems quieter on tickover and I can really hear the turbo spin up now :yahoo: , reminds me of my old RS Turbo days :naughty::lol:

Its a sound you either love or hate and I love it! :yahoo: Feel like I'm really driving a turbo-charged car now :lol:

For what it worth, I didn't buy the filter to increase the performance (but if I get a little more, I'll take it :P ) but because of the downturn the economy has taken, I can forsee the RAV staying with me for a good few more years than I planned orginally. So with that in mind, the K & N makes sense, it only requires an inspection after 25,000 miles and a clean and re-oil after 50,000 miles :thumbsup:

KNwarninglabel.jpg

BTW, changed the front dipped lights at the same time for the OSRAM Nightbreakers. :thumbsup: They will have there first proper test later this week but I will say removing the front dust shield (as per Anchorman's excellent instruction :toast: ) makes the job SO EASY. I wouldn't even like to try it with the dust shield in place.

All in all, it has taken me longer to upload the photos and write this post than do both of those jobs. :lol:

OH FUJI, wish you had posted your intent to buy the K+N, I bought one for mine tried it for a week £49 i recall, couldn't tell any difference the turbo whoosh became annoying, and i gave it to Anchs at the Warrington meet, he has since tried it didn't like the different sound + as far as i know its sat somewhere in his garage still in its box having done about 300mls What a shame :o Still it will be interesting to see if you notice any difference.. :thumbsup:

Still here if anyone wants it. Sounds like an RAF Typhoon has been sucked into the radiator grille!!!

PS as it technically still belongs to local hero you have to have his permission.

Will the filters fit the 4.2 ? ;)

No doubt you can get one but the 4.3 filter is a different size.

Anybody contemplating this should understand that they do generate quite a lot more noise. Before you buy one just take your air filter out and have a ride around the block to see how much difference the air filter makes. If you look at Fuj's pictures you will see that the original filter is very heavily lagged and the K&N is nowhere near as bulky. By all means go ahead and get one but be aware of the difference. I personally question how good any claimed fuel savings will be and my feeling is that an awful lot of research will have gone into the development of the OE filter.

However, no doubt Fuj will be reporting back at some stage with an assessment.

Just my luck! :lol: Thanks anyway Stewart! :thumbsup:

Spur of the moment thing last week after checking the car over, decided it was time for a new filter. :yes:

Sounds like an RAF Typhoon has been sucked into the radiator grille!!!

Like I said, it's a love it or hate it sound :D

Had that kind of turbo whoosh sound for (I think :unsure: ) seven years with the RS and anyway enjoyed it.

Plus the odd pop and bang and sheet of flame from the exhaust when the fueling was tweeked just a little to much. :lol::lol::lol:

One thing was for certain, nobody tailgated you for long with flame thrower out of the back! :blowup:

Thanks for the reply anchorman, whilst you were typing I checked and realised that DOH.

I bought a replacement stainless exhaust for a Nissan 200 once when the centre section back needed replacing thinking this'll last forever :D .

It lasted a week. I was so embarassed by the noise from it I joined a Nissan forum and agreed to swap it for a standard system. Never again. :rolleyes:

Have a look at the K & N website, to find one for your car. :thumbsup:

The K&N is about one inch thick, the OE filter is more like 3 1/2" thick, so there is no doubt that you will hear more induction noise. :yes:

Fuel savings :unsure: Like Anchorman, I doubt it. The only fuel savings will be because it is a new filter and not a clogged up old filter.

The real saving will be in it's life span, the longer I keep the car, the more miles I do, then the orginal cost per mile comes down, taking into consideration re-oiling (£8), every 50k miles. A great incentive for me to keep the car. :D

Wait til you get my age......

open air filter; straight thru exhaust (even more striaght thru than when I was in warrington) and cos the exhaust is maturing get a nice reassuring rasp from it. And can hear the turbo coming in at 2500rpm - yep - the number 1s running well just now. Funnily, we are looking to change back to the original air filter....altho also considering an Apexi D-Jetro style management system to manage the air intake (and everything else) better.....if anyones got a new one stacked in the garage, then I might offer a reward (6 bottles of Buckfast).

Looking forward to hearing your verdict on the light change.

The lights are much better :D What the orginal lights should have been like in the first place :P

Quick update on the K&N: First trip on the motorway this morning and very happy.

At motorway cruising speeds, once the turbo is up to speed, there is no difference (that I can tell) in the noise level between old air filter and the K&N. And considering that I do the vast majority of my miles on the motorway, that will do for me. :thumbsup:

Right while I have a minute, I better give a quick update.....

....and the verdict so far, after about 2500 miles.....

...... :thumbsup::yes:

The engine seems much less restricted at ...er shall we say :shutit: the higher motorway speeds. It seems to breath much more easily and spin more freely.

The induction noise, I hardly notice now, it is now just the normal noise the engine makes upon acceleration and like I said before when cruising on the motorway I cannot hear any difference between this K&N and the OE filter that was fitted before.

So yes, I am very happy :yes: :D

I was just looking to buy one the other day .

I like the sound of the turbo whosh too !!!!!!

So looks like i will order 1 ..........as my old 1 has done 25k miles now :thumbsup:

Does the mpg stay around the same ?

Im going in for the 3year service in 1-2 months so will may be best fitting after that ?? and also asking about the ecu upgrade , as its never had that done :yes:

Yes...more or less...I've given Miss Daisy the boot :o and tend to spend more time at those ..erm..higher motorway speeds since fitting the K&N. I also seem to have regained the love of traffic lights for some reason :naughty:

Strange thing that filter! :lol::lol:

Personally I'd fit it now, last thing you need is being charged for another OE filter during your service!

I must admit i loved the sound of the turbos of late , like you say the buzz of taking off from the lights .

My driving is mixed so i should get the most from 1 :yahoo:

Hi Mike

The filter originally came from Local Hero who had a go at it and after a while didn't like the noise either. I did discuss passing it on to another willing user and he has said yes by all means (he is very generous and kind). TBH if I had known Fuj' was thinking of having one he would have had it ages ago as LH and I both know him quite well. However, to be fair I offered it to Mick 1020 (who has offered to pay me for it but I didn't pay so I'm not selling it) so it would be unfair of me to sell it elswhere. Don't get me wrong if I had known you wanted it first you would have got it FOC. It was purely a matter of first taker and both LH and me are glad to see it go to a good home.

If you look at the genuine filter you will see it is a work of art and a lot of work has gone into it for silencing. Kingo will send you one at a discounted rate if you want one. If you choose the K&N (and Fuj' seems quite happy with his) you should be aware that it allows a very pronounced turbo whistle back through the inlet system - it sounds more like a Cummins than a RAV 2.2!

From memory the service interval for the filter is about 60k but that is too long. The one I changed at about 10 was black so anyone with a filter getting some miles on it might benefit from a quick check.

Unclip the upper housing;

IMG_1664.jpg

....remove the filter and clean out the housing;

IMG_1666.jpg

......filter supplied by Kingo;

IMG_1669.jpg

......install the new filter and ensure it is seated properly;

IMG_1670.jpg

.......ensure the cover is hooked properly at the back (there are 2 claws that allow the cover to hinge down from the back) and clip it shut - job done!;

Fitted the K&N filter on sunday and travelled to Gatwick airport and back in a 612 mile round trip .

It does sound great , a cross between a sucking and a whistling sound , like some have said it does sound pretty loud though when flooring the throttle

Like fuj said it gets addictive pulling away from traffic lights :D

Once on the run the noise goes and sounds no louder than normal .

The Mpg looks to have stayed the same .... Averaged 49 mpg on the OBC...... So the Tank to tank was 44 mpg for the whole journey . So very pleased with that :yahoo:

Im very pleased with the K&N and would recommend one , if you dont mind the extra noise .

Thanks AM
