Whistling Engine D4d 1600-2000rpm

I have 2004 D4D Avensis. I have noticed whistling sound coming from the engine when I well accelerate starting from 1600 and stopping on 2000 rpm. It cannot be heard when you accelerate gently only if you kick foot well down or when you going up to steep hill and engine is under load . I have tried revving the engine when the car is stationary but I cannot hear the sound. It seems to doesn't affect the performance I reckon. Is it something with Turbo or injectors or maybe Turbo hoses?

Anyone can help ?

It might be a hose. Check the pipes from the air filter box and also follow the pipes that go to the intercooler. Yours i think should be on the right side of the engine bay as its only a little one. Then check the pipe that goes from the intercooler to the intake manifold. If its torn it may be sucking in to much air than the ECU knows.

Sounds like the noise is coming in when turbo pressure is on the up, check exhaust side of the turbo (exhaust manifold side) for any soot marks (may be leaking at a gasket and blowing it like a reed) and check the air delivery side of the turbo for any loose hoses or small splits in the hoses.

hello. sounds to me like it is the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve operating under load nothing to worry about mine does excactly the same up hill under load. and it always stops at 2000 rpm when the engine is reaching its torque band. hope this helps.

My car has a gasoline eninge(3S-FE),but i experience something similar. Under load, during hard acceleration, most noticeble between 3000 and 6000 rpm, i hear a whining noice, like a whistle. I know however that there is some small leak on the exhaust, but not sure they are connected

How do you know it's the EGR valve?

Basically the EGR valve opens and shuts as you know to let some more exhaust gasses back into the engine to help reduce the emmissions at low revs(supposedley). When the engine is at high revs or has reached the torque band the valve doesnt operate as there is no pressure on the valve to operate it and the noise it makes when operating is like a raspy whistle (you can hear it better with the window wound down). You could try to change down a gear which in theory should take the engine revs up and stop it if revs above 2000 (which will be in the power/torque band) same goes for petrol engine try dropping it a gear and see what happens.

hope this helps

Ps you cant beat thrashing your car to clean everything out (high revs-long gear changes) should help if it is prominent as it could be sticking

I doubt it's the EGR on my engine then, since the noice is most noticeble at high rpm, at high torque band. Except, if it's not working closing proberly for some reason.

Could be the OP's issue though
