Rough Ride In My Auris

I have just purchased my first Toyota, an Auris SR180. It has low profile 225/45R17 tyres. The steering feels light when first starting but eventually feels very heavy, even at slow speeds. When driving on uneven roads it has a mind of its own. On uneven surfaces ruts and cambers in the road snatch the steering wheel from my hands. I am constantly tugging the steering wheel to bring it back on course and maintain a straight line. The car does not provide a very comfortable ride especially on long journeys and I am a little disappointed.

Is this normal behaviour for wide tyres or could there be something wrong? The front tyre pressures are 36psi and have been checked by Kwik-Fit. I previously had a VW Golf with similar tyres and had no such problems.

Is anyone else experiencing similar problems?

Dont want to provide you with wrong info because everyone has different perceptions but if your have to work to keep it going in a straight line then in my opinion something is up.

I have never noticed my t180 being difficult to control. Infact quite the opposite. If the surface is new and dry its turn through a corner like it is on rails. On rough or broken surfaces its not as smooth but that is to be expected. Its never difficult to control / or jittery.

225/40 18" tyres here... Especially when accelerating on some road which is not even, I really have to STEER too! It is normal when you have wide tyres, they're searching for the even spot and trying to jump to the side to avoid the univen line in which you are driving.

In my opinion wide tyres do give you some advantages too, you feel the road better and your car is more steady on the curves.

If it'll become really annoying, I suggest you to go to your dealer to make sure that everything's working fine!

Best regards, Alex
