Hi all. Complete noob here. After 4 great reliable years of running the above car, it has recently thrown up an issue. The car starts OK (not glow plugs then) and runs for about 10 minutes, then for no apparent reason it just seems to lack power and wont go above 40 mph without a huge black plume. There are no lights on the dash illumiated and a friend put it on his ecu checker and there are no error codes. I have looked through the corolla section and cant find any related topics. Please help

PS the cam belt is due this year and it is due for a service soon too.

Whilst i am not an expert, i would ask the following:

Does the car drive normally until reaches full working temperature and then it wont accelerate? How many miles has she done & does she have a full service history?

The symptons sound like a blocked EGR valve or your injectors could be on their way out, the latter will be expensive. However prior to worrying check the air filter to make sure its not blocked, and have a look around the hoses that feed air into the turbo for damage or air leaks. You could also try running some injector cleaner through the system to see if that helps. Having a full service would remove some of the possible reasons for the problem.

Drives normally until temp is reached then struggles- shes done 53K FSH- due for one at 60K- have taken the air filter out and drove it tonight-will put it back in and eliminate that one I think. The same problem ensued after 10 mins- whats an EGR valve? I know the injectors are expensive, but 53k on a toyota I would certainly hope not (does a D4D have injectors then (sorry limited knowledge) will check all the pipes tomorrow in day light. Thanks for the reply.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders, the valves can stick or fail. If you want to read more have a look on here EGR

The D4D has injectors to inject the Diesel in, sadly 5yrs old 53k wouldn't be an exceptionally low distance for failure, in order for Diesel to be converted from heavy fuel to clean smoke the technology has to be very complex and the system runs under extreme pressure.

It could be something as daft as a dirty Mass Air Flow sensor, i would search for a local Diesel Engineer's and ask them for an opinion.

My SR was having similar problems, it would start to slutter and die after about an hour or two worth of driving! However an error code did come up with mine and it pointed towards the fuel pump and system, to which end i took it back to the garage and has been sent away to Toyota UK for a new fuel pump/system and any other part they want to change, luckily for me though its all under warranty still, but from looking at your problem i don't think its that bad!

I certainly hope not! Maybe I should just take it to toyota and let them put it on the monitor and hope it comes up with a code (apparently their machines are able to do more than the normal ones) can I but one of these units to plug it in ?

Yeah it might just be worthing seeing what Mr T can find! I recon it may be something to do with the injectors as i found a few of the so called 'diseasels' have problems with the fuel rail etc

Worth putting some cleaner in the fuel ?

Its worth giving a go, i had that done to mine and it worked for 3 weeks after that, but as far as im aware the problem i have now is not related to the fuel injector one, so well worth a go mate!
