Power Steering Belt Loose ?

Hi all, mainly anchorman though.

How loose should the power steering belt be ? I can easily turn it through 90 degrees which as I recall is the ballpark figure for fitting cambelts.

I had new belts fitted when I had warranty work done maybe 4000 miles ago now and wondered if the belt now needs a pinch up.

General rule of thumb is that, as you say, you can twist the belt at the longest span through 90 degrees. If you can easily do this then I'd assume that you could twist it further too - if that's the case then I'd say it's not tight enough .

You should get a 90 deg twist on the belt - if you can get more it's too loose, less and it's too tight. This is just a general thing rather than a hard and fast rule though. If your power steering is working fine and the belt isn't slipping ( especially on Full Lock ) then it's OK usually.

( wait for one of the experts to confirm all of this though ! ) :P

I'm hoping that this may be the source of my engine noise as discussed in previous postings, here's hoping.

I agree with Boro Sera, I think it probably won't make much difference although it sounds like it could go a little tighter.

TBH you are clutching at straws with that because all that came off to do your water pump and it is still no different. If you listen really carefully does it sound like it is coming from the front of the engine (down by the drive belt)?

Hey Boro Sera, what about a link to some photos of that rare car of yours............

Hi mate,

there aren't that many pictures available at the moment - but when the weather heats up a bit and I venture as far as the garage I'll get it running again - street legal too - and get some nice ones !

( Camera's are both working fine so I've got no excuses ! )

Here's one to keep you in suspenders !

No that's my point, it only started making the noise after the pump was changed and the belts were renewed as I recall.

I've never seen one of those! I would love to see inside it and under the bonnet when you get out with the camera.

Cheers mate.

When it's back on the road I'll have a trip over and you can see it for real if you like !

Very much so if you are in this neck of the woods. I look forward to it.

Cheers
