Trip Computer / Sat Nav Background Light Blown?

Just bought a Toyota Avensis T3-S on a 55 plate for £5000 today. When using the trip computer and the sat nav on the dash does it have an orange background light? Mine does not seem to come on , what can be the problem? I have checked the DASH fuse in the glove box compartment but it is not blown. All other light on the centre console come on except for the backlight on the sat nav display.

Help will be greatly appreciated.

I have the same Avensis model as you and on a 55 plate too. My Satnav display does not have an orange backlight as per the other console lights but more of an LED 'Bronze/Silver' type illumination. I belive that my Satnav model is the TNS 300 variant and the brightness can be adjusted via the buttons below the unit itself. I think that you will have to refer to the Satnav manual in order to do this but the default setting - which mine is set to - is adequate for me so maybe you do have a problem in another area.

5k for a 3 year old Avensis seems a bargain ....... I've had my T3-S for a year now and although it's extremely low mileage and in excellent nick, I paid a good deal more than that. Ah - if only I had seen the credit-crunch coming 12 months ago!

I have a 05 plate, T3 and only the right hand bulb has blown but I guess they both will go eventually. I have asked my local Toyota dealer to have a look at it. He reckons that it will cost £48 per hour to take the dash board out to replace a £1 bulb. I will take it in this week and let you know if they can fix it as it's no good if you trying to use it at night time obviously.

Mine has a light on it, the same as the other lights all over the console. The brightness changes when you change the brightness of the dials as they are the same brightness.

Well I just come back from the Toyota Dealers, they just told me they cant fix it as it in the SATNAV unit as the would have to change the whole unit. This I find really strange. I will be contacting the Toyota GB, as their must be some one in UK that can repair it.. Does any one know?

I have an 05 Avensis with a similar problem. The sat nav screen has 2 lights, one for the sat nav display itself and one for the fuel monitoring display. One of these lights has failed. On investigation the two back lights are mounted on a printed circuit board inside the unit itself. The unit comes out easily but the printed circuit board is soldered in position by 4 lugs on the outer case. It is a bit awkward to un-solder these lugs but it can be done with care!! You then have to remove two rather flimsy ribbon cables in order to access the PCB. I have managed to get mine apart and the lights themselves appear to be either LEDs or miniature bulbs. I suspect they are LEDs because they do not normally fail and are usually soldered into place. This would also explain why the dealer is only interested in replacing the entire unit. I will try and ascertain whether they are LED's and if so I'll have a go at changing the faulty one. If I have any success I'll come back.

I un-soldered the blown light and it was, in fact, a bulb . I put the unit back in the car, checked the voltage, across the bulb terminals, which was 6 volts. Went to a Maplins store and bought a 6 volt sub miniature bulb, soldered it in place and it now works fine.

It isn't the sort of job you should attempt if you haven't any experience with messing about with circuit boards but for 99p my sat nav illumination is working again.

Hi Geoff,

I have some skills with a soldering iron and I too  have no lights on my sav nav.  I was wondering could you tell me the maplin code for the bulbs that you used to replace on the circuit board?

Hi Kev,

I no longer have the car but believe it or not I have come across the Maplin receipt in the garage.

They were 6v sub miniature bulbs and the code was PG 76.

Cheers,

Geoff
