Read a few previous posts and im unsure regards the above..

i have an avensis 2.0 d4d hatchback 2005...do i have a belt or a chain.......there is history with it from the lease company and that shows belt changed at 71k but reading on tinternet it seems this age and model would be drive chain!!!! (wandering if the service garage has just bluffed em for a belt fee!!!)

how do i find out for sure?

cheers

Yes,

All post 2000 cars have chains.

I also belive they are non-interference engines!! Which means if the chin/belt snaps the pistons won't be damages.

Perhaps someone could confirm if this is 100% true or not.

Cheers,

I think its only the VVTi petrols that are chain driven, next door has a 2002 D4D and i'm pretty sure its belt driven. Just open up the service book and it'll have the schedule in there relevant to that year Avensis telling you what is required at what age/mileage, if its belt-driven it'll be listed as a serviceable item.

To scouseiron69,

All early D4D engines are belt driven & are interferece engines. I suspect 2 litre D4D engines went to chain drive from 2006? Straight forward to check if you have belt drive as you just have to remove a couple of 10mm bolts from top of plastic covers, you will see belt right in front of you. Belt should be changed every 60,000 miles or 3-5 (may stand corrected over 3 to 5 years) years of age? despite the milage.

Regards, Beagh.

I don't think anyone has built a Diesel engine that isn't interference, have they? Due to the high compression required by a diesel engine, the pistons run so much closer to the valves than petrol engines. I stand to be corrected if anyone knows any different.
