Hi

I have a 2001 1.8 vvti avensis 117k, The problem I seem to be having is on occasions I find the gear changes are a bit stiff from 1st to 2nd , 2nd to 3rd.

Any suggestions will it be expensive to put right?

Regards

Paul

Hi,

Have you checked the gearbox oil level & your clutch fluid level?

Your clutch might need adjusting or on the way out. I am no mechanic, but have had gearbox / clutch issues in the past.

Do you have a whining noise coming from what sounds like underneath the car? If you do it could be the main gearbox bearing is going.

I had that problem on an Alfa 156. By the time I found out what was causing it, I needed a new gearbox & clutch.

If you want to check up on what a new second hand gearbox will cost try : http://www.partsgateway.co.uk/ enter all your details & wait for quotes usually within a few hours Monday to Friday, usually Dewsbury Auto Salvage Ltd have the best prices for Avensis parts & have a good next day service.

I would avoid eBay if a new box is required, as I had a bad experience on there with a gearbox.

Check with a local garage on what they would charge for fitting a replacement box, so you can work out the total cost, if a new box is the answer.

Hopefully this helps you.

Cheers, Marama

Hi,

Open the bonnet & to check the clutch fluid. Look at the back of the engine extreme left there is a white bottle(look at the left wiper arm, where it mounts on the motor & it's the bottle slightly to the right in the engine compartment). That is the clutch fluid.

Are you mechanically minded? I ask as you need to check the oil from underneath the car. If your not mechanically minded, take it to your local garage & ask them to advise you. If you are, I will give you the procedure!!

Have you noticed any patches of oil build up under your car or where you park?

Cheers

Hi I appreciate your help

When you mentioned about the whining noise Ive heard that occasionally as well anyways

There is no sign of oil leaking is the white bottle you talking about the brake fluid Ive just had a look couldnt seem to find any other bottle Does checking the oil involve undoing bolts Is it possible to call you if you leave your number in my mail box

You may be barking up the wrong tree blaming the gearbox itself, I believe the gearchange on yours is by cables. It could just be getting sticky on the gearchange mechanism and simply need lubricating.

Would hate for you to change the gearbox only to find it's still the same.

Hi,

I forgot it was a 1.8 & not a 2.0 . Sorry for that.

It's the one slightly to the right & behind that one (brake fluid) with a dark top on it. That is the clutch fluid resevoir.

Q.S. Is absolutely correct it may be the cable, but check the obvious & usual suspects first & then progress from there.
